Iberia A319 Retro Livery

Wed Dec 12, 2007 1:37 pm

There is a A319, EC-KKS, that is about to appear in an Iberia retro livery. I have seen the photos, and it looks really good. Hopefully some photos will appear on this site soon? Part of Iberia's 80th Birthday celebrations. Shame it isn't an A346.

Watch this space, and keep your eyes open. I believe this is a new build 319, as I cannot find any photos of it in the DB.

But this is what it looks like

That cheatline is hot! I'm very happy about seeing these retro schemes flourish, it's a nice way of remembering.

I wonder if we'll ever get the chance to see a classic Sabena scheme on an aircraft any time soon though.

They should have painted it the 70's scheme, with the large globe and IB in red on the tail. You cannot see that A319 tail in the distance. I think the LH retro design is superb!

Wow, looks great.... I'm glad this is catching on... roll on a retro AerLingus livery  bigthumbsup

The Iberia retro livery is more like this one below , with the same fuselage titles as on the tail, they changed to the bolder titles a couple of years later.

Wow, absolutely fabulous!

So far there has been no retro colours that failed to impress - they absolutely become the A 320 family.

Sadly, TK and MX withdrew their retro A320, SK, LH and AC, however, introduced theirs, and US did the greates thing since bread came sliced - as well,

seems like the A320 family are the stereotype of the retrojet...

in my opinion all 60s and 70s liveries should be reapplied: just think of the 60s-SR-colours on a A330 for example, or an A380 in BOAC livery, or a 787 in the original RG-colours...or the A380 in retro QF garment, or even in retro AR livery...a Triple 7 in CO's 70s colours, etc...

oh my, the current colours are all right (some, however, boring as cooking shows  Wink , the new OK-colours come to mind),
somehow they seem to lack soul - they are nice computer designs, practical, save paint, but are hardly pieces of art (even though I do like the minimalistic SWISS colours).

Bring retro back!

PS: Retro's beauty is not restricted to the A320 family, have a look at the amazing AV Mad Dog and 757 as well as at the well-known (sadly repainted by know) AA 757 and 737-800:

Funnily enough, the TK retrojet actually ended up flying with MX

Does anybody know if the airlines have some new type of computerized painting equipment?

There seems to be a proliferation of one-off paint jobs. In addition, some of them, like the tails on Frontier look like photographs and could not possibly be done with the old-fashioned masking tape and paper cover method of painting airplanes.

The designs on the F9 tails are not painted on the tails, but they are (rather large) stickers.

I agree with you even more.

When I first knew about this retro livery 4 weeks ago, the first thing I said was "oh wow...the IB letters on the golden globe identify Iberia much better than the Convair-440 livery....they should use the 70's livery for the A319!!"

Quoting RAFVC10 (Reply 12):

Well...about a couple of months ago in a Spanish aviation forum, a fellow user (and an IB pilot too) said "just wait one year" when the question about the possibility of a new livery was asked. I don't want to "levantar la liebre" but I would say that this comment means something, don't you think?

I wouldn't change the current livery. Even though it's 30 years old (introduced in 1977 for IB's 50th anniversary) I think it still looks very nice...when the aircraft is clean!!!

nice to have an aircraft in retro livery, but for any reasons I don't like this paintscheme at all, I don't know why. But I recently flew on an A319 which was build this summer and the interior of these new aircrafts are great! Especially the seats are looking very modern and stylish.

At the moment nobody could beat the LH-retro style

I couldn't agree more! When in Spain you may get tired of it -like with any logo you see everyday. But when you are in a foreign airport, IB aiplanes stick out a mile. They simply look great ...of course, when they are clean, that on long haul is almost never!  Sad

BA retro liveries on two 767s would be hot - a shorthaul ship in BEA colours and a longhaul one in BOAC colours.

I hope that doesn't happen, or at least no drastic change. IB's livery is very nice, and very recognizable for everyone and from a distance. IMO they would make a big mistake by changing it ...

Wonderful airplane. I've seen it this afternoon and it looks even better than pictures.

Hopefully I'll be there tomorrow to see the takeoff. It's going to be interesting to see the A319 taking off from just a 1500 m (4921 ft) long runway.

This is kind of on topic:

So if I was in charge of this sort of thing for NWA, here's what I would do.

The first 787 to be delivered is painted in current livery
The next would go in 90's livery.
The next would go in the 80's livery.
And etc. until all jet-age liveries were covered.

It would be a cool marketing gag and would excite all us birdwatchers.

Heyyy... that's not true!  Wink

Take all the classic liveries, but not only the ones that make the tails look nice, but all of those that make the entire aircraft look really special, magical; and those are:

Iberia; for sure!
Lufthansa, a classic!
British Airways (where are those fantastic theme tails?)
KLM, dutch!
Gulf Air, very special!
Air New Zealand, unique!
Quantas, all Australian, pure identity!
Aeromexico, takes you back to the Aztecas!
Aer Lingus, it is purely Saint Patrick!!

And so many others...

There are liveries that mean so much emotionally, that they are not just a matter of pretty design, they are 'part of our lives'. Ok.... I am going emotional. But it is true. IB livery in Spain is boring, just as much as KLM livery is boring in Holland but, globally IB has a livery that is beyond time and fashion. ....at this time -and if it is clean!  Wink

No, I don't agree with you.

The current IB's livery is timeless as you never see it to be outdated. I might say the same about AA.

Maybe ...do you prefer the UA's policy about liveries and having one different livery every decade? C'mon! That's not very serious.

I don't know, I don't like the 'Cola Cao' logo. I think the 60s-70s 'world' logo would have been much snappier.

And I do hope that, if they renovate their 'standard' paint scheme they also keep the cheatline that give their planes so much personality.

However, I've been in MAD in October, and some little things caught my attention - I remember seeing the logo and brand on a paler red color, without yellow, and with some thin red lines replacing the traditional yellow-orange-red bands.

Time will tell.
