New CO Uniforms?

Thu Dec 13, 2007 4:27 am

In the thread about the new NW uniforms, there was some talk of new CO uniforms incorporating similar colors to what NW just released, but I didn't see anything anywhere about new stuff for CO. Does anyone from CO have any idea as to what the new uniforms might look like?

I would hope that the striped shirts would go away. They look too much like the uniforms that some Amtrak conductors wear.

I'd like to see CO update its livery first. It's getting a bit tired and dated.

CO will not be getting totally new uniforms in the forseeable future. Instead you will see small changes every so often , like single breasted blazers vs. double breasted, different ties and or scarves , solid color shirts vs. pin stripes etc. Personally, think the Uniform is classy enough where small changes are enough to keep it looking stylish.

ROFL!! I think there would be some minor changes, but nothing major.

I doubt that would happen, unless, of course, they go into bankruptcy and want to emerge as a different, new and improved airline. CO is doing fine in the public eye, so I doubt changing the livery is even in the minds of the execs.

You bite your tongue, CO and bankrupt not in the same sentence please!

The CO uniforms IMO are fine minus the shorts and double breasted coats!

The CO livery I like and is very well recognized, at least there is 1 or 2 airlines in the U.S. with most every aircraft looking the same.  Smile

I think CO has managed to keep a fairly classic uniform. I agree, no reason to change.

As to the livery, I again think -- why change? At least it isn't that aweful red/gold of the 70's and 80's.

But, if they were going to change, I'd change the company name to a cursive script or something similar. But the gold world design on the blue I think looks nice.

Sure has hell beats the aubergine colored unform I wore when I started (1987) (Yes, aubergine. Eggplant). Nasty.

Ahhh...the days of aubergine for CO and military green for EA..those were the days! And don't even get me started on the tan & burgundy PAISLEY dress at PI or the wild-wild-west chocolate brown cowboy look at US! (all in early 80's)

I agree with most that CO has a classic uniform (save the shorts which are horrendous.) From an ee's standpoint though, it is nice to have a little change every now and then...a new tie, new shirt makes a big difference in your own opinion of the uniform you wear day after day.

AA will be the only US airline w/out new uniforms!!! AA Management just want to cut costs at all cost no matter how it deteriorates their overall image...awful!

That was my first uniform too. When I started, Continental paid for the uniform (two coats, two pants, five shirts and one tie.). Soon after, they started making all new hires buy their own uniforms.

The flight attendants were sooooooo pissed when these uniforms were introduced. The uniform was exactly the same for the attendants and the gate/ticket counter agents. Before that, the attendants and the terminal workers had different uniforms.

We had very strict regulations. No earrings on men, women's earnings no larger than a quarter. At first, we were required to wear the jacket even during the summer at IAH in 100 degree heat. This was even though we had to run back and forth to the ramp regularly. This was eventually modified in the summer.

The current uniform CO has, IMO, is one of the best looking out there. The women's dress looks great! The ties on the men are very good looking. I don't think CO needs a uniform change anytime soon, but they could expand their uniform line a bit and give color choices for scarves and ties.

I think they should bring back Pan American powder blue!! They were so cool.

I am not suggesting a return to the 1960's when women were fired for getting married. But I am amazed the flight attendants on the Asian airlines. I flew ANA from NRT to PVG last year. The flight attendants were totally identical. You could not tell them apart. Same hair, same makeup, same shoes, same stocking. No individual items in their uniform. When walking through the terminal they even wore hats!! I haven't seen hats on flight attendants since I was a small boy.

The company is currently surveying the employees on new ties for men and women, as well as scarves. Other than that, everything will be staying the same. I wish we would get rid of the striped shirts and keep only the white ones.

Please. The livery is crisp and business-like. Perfect for what CO's image is. We don't need new liveries every 3 or 4 years because someone on Anet is bored.  Big grin

Bingo. Lame reason for a uniform change.

The men's uniform, in my opinion, is very chic indeed

Last year, as DL was phasing in the new ladies' uniforms, one of the FA's was wearing the red hat. I have to say, I wasn't sure at first, but the color/style truly fit her personality (in the best sense) and made for a striking and smart looking uniform.

Not quite... New ties yes.... but also new shirt: French Blue. AFAIK these will not replace existing items, but will be additional options. Should be available 'after 2nd Quarter' next year. ... Joy..  bored

Gotta add my 2 cents here and say I agree with most everyone else. Continental's uniforms and livery look fantastic! Thank goodness they won't be changing them! Continental comes across as a very classy operation. I remember when they were flying the "golden meatball" planes and had those lovely (NOT!) Aubergine uniforms in the early 1990s...the flight crews looked so dejected walking out to their a/c at the terminal. It's amazing how much they have changed their image and how far they have come! Their current uniforms and planes are excellent! (I don't know why, but now they remind me of Nordstrom's for some reason. That's a very good association!) The only other airline out there with great looking uniforms, as far as US airlines go, would be Delta. The crews look great, including those that wear the hats! Both these airlines have done a fantastic job with their uniforms! My own airline, on the other hand....um, let's not go there...lol!

Speaking of uniforms, what is the rule of thumb about flash (pins). I notice some crew have them, some don't. Those that do most often are something like US flag, or company pin/symbol. Do airlines limits what may be put on a uniform? (Obviously, to a point yes, but who much freedom is left to add a "personal" touch as it were?).

Thanks!

Yes Big grin , but we do have guidelines for what type of pin, how many and where they are to be placed (for blazers, shirts and aprons).

My blazer has my ISM name bar, my wings, my SkyTeam pin and a red maple leaf (gotta represent). My apron, well that is a whole different ball game.

CO current uniforms do look outdated very late 80's early 90's...way to go! They need an update especially when most US Majors have changed or modified their uniforms. AA will the only US major w/out uniform updates...hopefully they will feel pressed to react since all other carriers are doing the same. AA uniforms look outdated and generic, their FAs look awful! :O

I don't think those in charge make the decision to get new uniforms based on that others are doing it. As a wearer of this uniform, I don't mind it. I just wish there were more choices for men.

Separate from cabin crew uniforms, though, how many formal choices are there really for men? Dress shirt is standard, tie is standard (unless you want a bowtie, but I'd be pretty surprised if CO added that as a uniform option for its F/A's), and pants are standard. What choices does that really leave you with? A sweater vest or a jacket?

Color choices for shirts. Long sleeve or short sleeve. With or without epaulets. Styles of ties (wider variety of patterns).

Choices like that.

I realise that men don't get a lot of choices for what to wear (trousers, shirt, tie, jacket, sweater), but within that range can be a lot of other choices/styles/colors, etc..

I was thinking that with all this talk of new airline uniforms, Stacy and Clinton from What Not to Wear do an airline episode of the show. That would be a hoot and a half to watch.

White and pinstripe shirts now, French Blue added next year. Six ties now, three or four more come with the new shirt.
I just stay with the short sleeve pinstripe and rotate the ties once a week..

Several have mentioned other airlines' FA uniforms. My thoughts:

- dump the housecoat looking dresses... not flattering on any woman
- stop the use of pocket squares, men's and women's uniforms... too 1980s looking
- for domestic US flights, men should not have to wear a tie. A man in a suit with a one button open dress shirt (sans tie) can look sharp
- ban blue hose... too much navy

Traveling is tough. It's also really difficult to eat properly and exercise. Airlines should help educate their employees on how to find better food and exercise while traveling. Not only will it benefit the individual health of the airlines' employees, they will look better in their uniforms!
