Airbus has received certification of the Engine Alliance GP7200 powered A380.

It will take a while yet, but I'll be very interested to see how the two engines compare in service.

This is good news.
It should widen the market for the new plane.
Although my preference goes to RR/Trents, I hope many more will be sold with AE engines.
Go A380!
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Understated!

Singapore is reporting lower than promised fuel burn on their one A380... but is that due to the A380 or the Trents? The GP7200 promises a slightly lower fuel burn than the Trent. But that is compared to the Trent promise...

Competition is a good thing. Let's get these into the fleet and let the market decide which they like better!  bigthumbsup

F-WWEA, the EA GP9200 test aircraft, came to OSL on Tuesday and left at 0800 today. It was here to test the engines in freezing fog conditions, reportedly as part of the certification program.
In an interview with a Norwegian newspaper, Wolfgang Absmeier, the test pilot on the A380, said the following:
"... however, in next April it will be rebuilt in a passenger configuration..."

This aircraft was originally planned to go to Etihad, and would thus be re-engined to the RR Trent 900.
But, Etihad have deferred the delivery of the A380s they have on order to 2013. I don't know whether F-WWEA will get its engines changed or not any longer.
Anyway, I found the bit that it would be refurbed from April interesting, since it's likely that at least on of the test aircraft originally destined for Etihad has a new customer, and that they may be delivered sometime during the next two years.

Any guesses about where it will go? Kingfisher?

It will be curious to see who steps up as new customers on the A380. Like it or not, that is dependent on both performance and getting the production rate up.

I didn't think Kingfisher had selected A380 engines yet.

Hasn't EK snapped up all the A380 slots that have become available through other airlines deferrals? I'd be surprised if this went to anyone other than EK.

Isn't the VIP one supposed to go to the Prince next year - I was expecting that to be the test one that we've seen about with no tail?

The VVIP one will be Trent 900 powered, not GP7200.

They were founded in 2004. During the press conference at Le Bourget, where Kingfisher ordered more aircraft, the minister of transportation (IIRC) said that they were going to change that rule...
Kingfisher will receive their first A330 in a month or two, as with the first A345. Using latter on domestic routes for two years doesn't sound like the most economic solution  expressionless

No, they haven't as far as I know... They will have Trent 500s on the A345s, Trent XWBs on the A350s, the A32X are powered by engines from IAE, but the A330s will be powered by PWs. Don't know if they prefer one engine manufacturer over another as some airlines do...

Hi, My cousin is a stewerdess on kingfisher and my understanding is that they plan to fly to NYC starting august 2007. I will look to see if I can find any sources for this. That may why Kingfisher would want to get access to A380s faster

PW have been enjoying a bit of a revival on the A330. They've picked up Kingfisher, Guggenheim, Flyington and Grupo Marsans and gained repeat orders from TAM, Air Caraibes and US Airways. We should also assume they'll get the engine order for this year's Thai A330 order (though with TG you never know). What will be interesting will be the 9 x A333 for Swiss. GE can forget it but both PW and RR must be in with a chance. Then there's the outstanding order for 20 for Air Hong Kong. And if Shanghai do decide to buy A330s I could see PW winning that one too.

But they need the A330. It's all they have left. To date, PW have just 4% of FIRM widebody business announced in 2007.

Thanks PM. The PW4168A is a great engine. Now if they didn't overheat the compressor surge vents and it had been properly launched as the PW4172!  cry 

The original PW4168 did dominate the A330 market. It should have continued that domination... but Pratt blew it and RR did a nice little evolution of their Trent. So I agree, there are a lot of orders to compete on.

Pratt has decided to re-enter the market from the single isle side: MRJ and C-series. I'm not sure about the A350. I think they should enter the market, but my sources are saying zilch about the airframe.

As to the A380, IT should wait as long as they can to see how the two engines perform. My sources on the AE engine are excited about its performance.

Indeed. PW are looking at 4% of the widebody market in 2007 and that's down from an already dismal 7% in 2006.

Yep. But then RR pulled level and then left PW in their wake. Give or take the odd plane or two, RR currently have 42% of the A330 market, PW have 28% and GE have 23%. (The missing 7% have yet to choose an engine.) These figures are for operators only. If you add in orders for leasing companies which have not yet been placed then RR's lead increases still further. Leasing companies have ordered 109 RR-powered A330s, 40 with GE and 30 with PW.

It looks highly unlikely now that RR will ever lose its lead on the A330. Not bad considering it was the first Airbus widebody where RR competed.  bigthumbsup 

What's all this got to do with the GP7200 on the A380? Er, nothing, really.  blush

If its any better than the T900 in terms of SFC etc (which itself has planned upgrades already, of course), EK will really be sitting pretty on their A380's.....  Smile
