AC 777 Routes

Fri Dec 14, 2007 4:41 pm

I am flying AC to PEK from YVR next month in Executive First and I am trying to figure out whether I'll get an XM plane or not. I found a page on AC's site yesterday that I (of course) am unable to find again. Anyway, it was a list of destinations that should have the XM planes as of now. It was all YYZ and included, IIRC, LHR, PEK, HKG, CDG? and a couple others.

I have four questions.

-Do you think that list is simply their 777 routes? That way, unless then do an equipement change, its definitely XM.
-Does YVR-PEK ever operate as a 777?
-Where do the 763ER's fly?
-What are my chances of getting XM, given that about half of the in service 763's have been converted so far.

Thanks,

Charlie

I believe you answered your own question !! AC rotates pretty evenly throughout its networt all the XM equipped B763's. You got a 50% chance of getting one.

I checked the sked for April, and it still show a B763.
us Air Traffic Controllers have a good record, we haven't left one up there yet !!

I found the link.

How can I find the routes that operate as a 763?

Most routes operated by a B763 are not guaranteed to have an XM aircraft. However there are a few routes in the system were AC is attempting to dedicate XM aircraft. The only way to determine this is to complete a mock reservation on AC.com for the route you want. If a Star shows up next to the equipment type, then you can be almost sure you will get a refurbed aircraft - although still subject to change.

Up until a few weeks ago, this star was only displayed on B777 flights, but now it's being broadened to B763 flights.

Any idea what routes they are trying to designate XM aircraft for?

Edit: Now that I poke around, they seem to be hoarding them for LHR routes. This makes sense, as it is more of a business market than some others (Hawaii, SXM, etc). LHR, however, is only 2 or 3 flights a day, leaving almost 10 refurbished 763s for other flights.

Here is a small list:

YHZ-LHR
YOW-LHR
YYZ-YVR
YYZ-FRA
YYZ-LHR
YYZ-BOG
YVR-NRT
YVR-PEK (quite a stretch for the 763ER, but OK for AC)

The rest of the aircraft are scattered throughout the network. LHR/FRA seem to be the initial routes that are receiving dedicated XM B763s...but that doesn't mean that these are the only routes. Unfortunatly for the rest it's a gamble at this point. As of Dec 16th, there will be 13 converted 763s flying.

No need to do a mock reservation. Just go to ac.com and on the main page, type in your departure and destination point, along with the dates and click "schedule" and then submit. All flights will show, including a/c type and the little star showing if the a/c is XM or not.

Thanks for the great info everybody. I guess I have to just cross my fingers and hope I get XM both ways. Has anybody experienced BOTH the new and old exec first seats?

To be honest, I prefer the old seats. I felt claustrophobic in the new ones when trying to sleep and found it annoying to have a ledge that my left arm rested on when trying to sleep. The new AVOD is nice, but has glitches. On my flight the system kept resetting itself, which was ok because it just started off from where it stopped.

The service from the crew was good (as it usually is) and I really liked the mood lighting.

I've never been in Exec First, but I've experienced the XM Economy product on the A320 and E190. All I can say is the Y is a HUGE improvement on what they had before!

No one seems to have mentioned 763s to SXM, to which weekly seasonal service started this past Saturday (on an XM A/C, based on the mock reservation method - XM to SXM!). While my experience is that the seat plan will only show up a short time before the actual flight date, I am going to SXM Jan 26 and the seat plan has been showing the XM layout for a couple of weeks. While that is good news, my main fear is that it is a bad omen, since last minute changes are very common.

Slightly off topic but where will the 5th and 6th 777-200LR be deployed? The first 4 are on YYZ-HKG and YVR-SYD (next month).
Takeoffs are optional; landings are mandatory.

The expectation is Toronto-Asia routes. That's what you will see in timetables, but those are subject to change.

Flying an Air Canada 777 or 767 XM is like the lottery, you just cannot tell and they switch the fleet around on the routes like no tomorrow...

I flew Air Canada in April LHR-YYZ-YVR, I kept checking the aircraft types I was supposed to be flying on months before I flew and no exageration the aircraft types switched probably 10 times in that time frame... The LHR-YYZ route switched from between a 763, 773, 333 and at one point was a 340. Also the YYZ-YVR route switched several times from 762, 763, 319 and 321.

It was finally a two week old 773 I flew on for the trans-Atlantic portion and then at the other extreme a 762 for the domestic leg!

I was supposed to be on a 773 flying home, but again this changed several times and was finally a 763 XM I flew on travelling back YYZ-LHR.

I was very lucky with aircrafts used on my Trans-Atlantic routes!

The XM and 777 fleet are a great product for Air Canada,

I'll just sit in the club and cross my fingers . . .

Has anybody else noticed how (per the AC website) the international lounge is the only club in YVR to NOT have showers? The domestic and transborder ones apparently do, doesn't that seem backwards?

That seems totaly logical to me. Almost all passengers wanting to use showers would be arriving on long international flights and connecting to domestic or transborder flights. They would first have to clear immigration/customs and then proceed to the domstic/transborder areas. Makes more sense to have the showers in the areas closest to where their flights will be departing and after they have cleared all the arrival formalities.

AHA! That does make sense, as not many people are going to want to take a shower before the long flight. Good call, I'll be sure to take advantage of that service. I just hope I'm well rested after those long flights.

When are the 777s coming to SYD? I had thought they would be here by this week -- both the 77W and the 77L. Any updates?

I have heard great things about the AC product on the 777 (and 767 XM).

What, the first one didn't arrive on the 15th? The 77Ws should be landing in SYD daily now.

The first non-stop YVR-SYD left YVR on the night of Dec 14th and arrived in SYD on Dec 16th. The 77W will do the route during the high season (Dec and Jan). The 77L will take over the route starting in February

I found a few at http://www.vpmag.com/yssy/viewtopic.php?p=161717

So far, AC seems to have had some challenges keeping the YYZ/YVR/SYD flights on schedule, particularly with the severe snow storm in Toronto last Sunday. However some of the turnaround times seem to have been long.
