Major Weekend Storm - Delays?

Sat Dec 15, 2007 3:18 am

A huge winter storm will strike the Ohio Valley Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Snowfall totals will be significant and the wind will be a factor as well on Sunday. Have there been any talks about airport closures Sunday morning? Local news called for the possibility of thundersnow on Sunday morning as well as significant blowing and drifting of snow with winds gusting to 40mph.

IND will get hit hard. What about CLE? Has anyone heard the forecast for the Cleveland area? Fortunately this storm is hitting overnight during the weekend so the impact on FX should be minimal.

Local weather just said a foot of snow for the city for this storm. If there isn't a brief period of snow & sleet the total could be higher.

Yea...........and I've seen the weather reports talk about feet of snow only to turn into light snow flurries. Looking at the radar loop I don't see it happening. I don't know where all that moisture will come from

The Gulf. The connection isn't backfeeding far enough into the system as it sits now, as it moves east the southerly flow from the Gulf will be moisture-laden.

Here in CT we are going to be pounded with snow, sleet, and freezing rain. It isn't looking good for Saturday into Sunday. BOS,JFK,PVD, and BDL I have a feeling will have many cancellations. Especially for all the snow.

Even if CLE and CVG are hit much harder than the Northeast, if flying CO or DL, still a lot better to go via CLE or CVG than EWR or LGA. I expect the ground-stops into the New York airports to exceed 2 hours.

I hope I-65 won't be too bad, as I'm driving up to Indianapolis from Louisville at about 10AM this morning; my plans may have to change, as I'm going up to watch my school's basketball team play (Louisville Cardinals vs. Purdue). Down here at SDF, it started sleeting at around 6:30, and its currently a mix of a cold rain and sleet. The last few UPS departures and first wave of airline departures were impacted and not a single plane has taken off or landed since 6:59AM (as of 8:31AM); actually, a UPS 744 from ANC landed at 7:59, but that's been it so far.
Looks like IND, ORD, CLE, and DTW will be highly impacted (especially IND and ORD). NYC, PHL, and BOS, as well as places such as BUF and SYR (and all of the regional airports in north PA and upstate NY) tomorrow and Monday.
Cincinnati (CVG) may be impacted somewhat, but it doesn't look like Louisville will get much more than rain after this morning and we'll probably only get 1 or 2 inches of snow tonight here at SDF.

I don't see that happening either. The only snow in that whole area is lake effect snow... and that is not even making it east of the NY-VT boarders... and staying well north of CT

Latest report is that the bulk of the storm will go north around CT, RI, and MA

Instead of the forecasted foot+, its going to be half that in snow, rain/freezing rain.

Booooring

"Sunday

Nor'eastah! Morning snow goes to rain along the coast and sleet, freezing rain farther inland. 2-4" of snow along the coast before the changeover and 4-8" outside of I-495. The rain & freezing rain tapers to drizzle by afternoon. This storm is a wetter storm for all as well as a windier storm. Highs from 31 inland to 41 south shore/Cape. SE 15-20 mph."

OK... where did this all come from. I looked on the radar an hour ago and the entire nation was clear.. except for a little lake effect. I come back from the store and an hour later there is this monster sitting right smack in the middle of the country..!! If I knew how to post images I would have...!!

I'm in PIT on a layover. I got in about 2:45pm EST and the snow arrived earlier than expected. At this point they've upped the estimated snowfall totals to 4-6" mixing with ice from now till Sunday evening. Lets see if I make it to SMF tomorrow. I leave here at 9:00am tomorrow!

The forecasters in DC started predicting a major winter storm on Monday morning. They later predicted snow, sleet, and the dreaded "wintry mix". The forecast seemed to change every few hours. Today the winter weather watch was changed to a winter weather advisory, and this evening that was changed to a high wind watch.

For DCA it doesn't seem that there will be any wintry precipitation to foul things up, but the predicted 40+ mph. winds could cause havoc. There could be heavy rains at times also. Don't know about IAD and BWI.

The good news, at least for here, is that the weather should move out tomorrow afternoon.

The forecast through monday morninng in greater CLE is calling for upwards of perhaps a foot of snow, with some freezing rain mixed in for your traveling pleasure. By Sunday afternoon, we could have blizzard-like conditions. If you're traveling through CLE tomrrow evening, you could end up there for the night.

ORD is up to 3 hours and 26 minute arrival delays.

It's going to suck in CLE tomorrow, that is for sure.

PIT-NYC is pretty much the snow/rain line as of now. South it is raining..north is the white stuff. Real bad on a DTW BUF BTV line. What is gonna run Sun morn is a function of a few things starting with is the aircraft really in the city....is the weather ok enough to allow deice to work...is the destination open.....don't even mention crew legalities and patterns. Ops centers for the carriers are looking at all those issues as well as forecast to make decisions on what launches or not in the morning....best bet is by 0300 est they should...should...have somewhat of a handle on it.

A.net prognosticators, I've got one for you:

I'm supposed to be leaving BUF on the 18th at 6:30 in the morning, heading to CLT. Should the storm have cleared up by then, or should I still expect some problems getting out of BUF?

I got back from Indianapolis earlier tonight, and the weather up there really wasn't that bad (at least not yet); only about 1-2 inches on the ground, with the streets being simply wet, not snow-covered or icy. I was able to travel a steady 65 mph. down Interstate 65, so not bad at all. However, I believe the worst is yet to come for Indy, as that radar doesn't look very promising right now. The Weather Channel was saying possibly at least 5 inches before all is said and done up there - most of it will probably occur tonight and tomorrow morning.
The weather looks rather messy in the Detroit area/DTW, as well as Chicago/ORD/MDW...
It looks like another Nor'easter is on the way - be prepared for some major travel issues in BOS/NYC/PHL!  alert

Your flight should operate fine. Now the roads will be icy in the morning, so be careful, but the storm will be gone by then. Everything should be fine by Monday.

Well this big snow event for IND is starting to look like a big ice event. I look outside my back door and there is a decent accumulation of ice on the power lines and trees. So which do the airlines prefer? Heavy snow or the ice? Which is easier for them to deal with?

In the MKE area we were only supposed to get around 1-3 originally, but it didn't stop coming down so then they changed it said it could be up to 5 inches. Looking outside my window though it looks more like 8 inches! Anyways, I'm sure MKE was pretty clogged up with delays today cause of the snow.

Look a little up the road to Lafayette or Champaign. Last obs up there were both 1/4 SM SN+. That deformation zone is pretty mean business, and will drop another quick couple inches as it spins through Indy in a few hours.

I would imagine the snow is far easier to deal with. You can plow snow off the runways/ramps. Ice requires alot more effort and material.

Anyone know why NW / 9E canceled ALL flights from OKC (to MSP, DTW, & MEM) Saturday?? The website says "canceled due to weather" but there was nothing but a dusting this morning and none of the other airlines had problems getting out. There wasn't a single NW flight in or out.

In anticipation of snow that was originally forecasted maybe? Seems extreme.

The radio said about an hour ago that about 160 departing and 70 arriving flights had been cancelled so far at YYZ for Sunday. Large numbers of cancellations were starting to happen at YOW and YUL as well as the storm moves east. Since so many planes are based at YYZ it has a ripple effect across Canada. Hopefully they moved aircraft out of the city before the storm.

I'm at my friends house right near IAD. It's nice now, but was all rain when the precip came down - no sign of a flake or ice pellet. NWS and local weather really messed up the forecast in the DC area. Not sure which weather model they were on - the GFS, the European, or another, but either way they were way off.
