UA Downgrades BKK To 777

Sat Dec 15, 2007 3:23 pm

Not sure when this happened, but I see in United's reservation system that they have downgraded the NRT to BKK flight in June of next year to a 777. Anyone know when that happened and why? I've flown that flight several times, and my impression was that those 747s were always very full.

Maybe they need the 747 for Washington/Bejing

I know technically it is a downgrade, but until they replace the seats in the 744s and install PTVs in coach, then I would consider this an upgrade!

That's funny, perhaps it is temporary, does anyone know? My friend in BKK told me he had heard rumors that UA was going to downgrade to a 777, I said never, those planes were too full. Was I wrong?

NRT-BKK was consistenly UA's highest LF flight...also there is probably lots of cargo demand as well..I was surprised that not only did UA downgauge BKK but so did NW.

They're probably trying to stimulate yields. Also, bear in mind that TG has added quite a bit of capacity of the USA-BKK market in recent years.

It's not a downgrade, it's a downgauge. And as you point out, it's really an upgrade for the passengers.

You don't hear that everyday, it almost sounds kind of weird, a route being "downgraded" to a 777.

Assuming this is just for installing PTVs in the 744s but how many UA 744s are currently in storage?

United has NO PLANS to install PTV's on their 747's. This has been noted MANY times in various threads.

Zero. United has no 744s in storage. What might be out there are lease returns that no longer belong to UA.

UA doesn't have any INTL aircraft in storage. If they did they would have pulled them a long time ago instead of closing profitable routes to open MORE profitable routes.

From a non-rev point of view, both NW's and UA's flights between Narita and Bangkok have always been nightmares. They are among the most challenging flights in the world to stand by for -- *always* overbooked.

Seems odd they would downgrade to a lower capacity aircraft, but maybe the yields weren't so high?

I hate to admit this, what does PVT stand for?

Umm isn't this because of the Olympics? I would imagine there are a lot of "funny" temporary route "downgrades" to supply more traffic to Beijing.

Correct. This is not the first time we have the 777's here in BKK. There is also a seasonal background behind this decision plus there is an expected decline of tourists in 2008 plus a slow down in Thailands Economy. While these are not the only facts, there is also TG with an increased capacity to the US and Japan. Of course, on top of it, is UA's plan of reconfiguration their business class etc.

I wouldnt worry to much and presume that the 744 will be back Summer 2009. More interesting would be to look in to UA's HKG-SIN Sector.

UA also downguaged the LAX-NRT to a 777 which is probably the airplane which fed the NRT-BKK route.

Where? They replaced a once-daily 747-400 LAX-TPE-BKK with a once-daily A340-500 LAX-BKK. The nonstop service is more convenient, but I would not call it an addition of capacity. Their only other service to the USA is BKK-JFK, also with an A340-500.

Yes, but previously they only served LAX whereas with the nonstop service they serve both LAX and JFK. Additionally, they've upgraded the frequencies on both routes.

I suspect we are going to see lots of chops and changes, such as a 747 replaced by a 777 and vice versa by UA over te next year or so while they reconfig the aircraft with the new International product.
