AirTran's Livery

Sun Aug 27, 2000 9:35 pm

Aircraft liveries have such a big influence on how we perceive airlines and the planes they fly. So without offending any AirTran fans, I have to say it is the most god-awful thing I think I have ever seen on an aeroplane. The 717 is a nice looking aircraft, but in those colours - arrrggghhh!!!!

Having only seen AirTran planes in photos, I'd love to know, is it that bad in person?

No offense taken. I like the livery, and it looks better in person. Besides, it really stands out in a group of tails. And it is so much better than a bunch of the white-bodied airlines of today.

The Tan body is different than all of the airlines of today. If You noticed, Delta also picked the tan for their 757s. So they must think Tan is not that bad or they would not have picked it. I think the A is okay. Not the best, but it is not ugly at all in person. Also. The way to tell a 717 from a DC-9s is to look at the tail. The 717 has a squarer tail. Just a point of interest I thought I would share.

I think that it looks very nice. Living in Atlanta, I get to see it alot. It's alot better than the old Value Jet livery.

Air Tran's livery is very original, and is one of the best in sky.

I like the present AirTran livery, but the original AirTran (prior to the ValuJet merger) was one of the best schemes I have ever seen. I wish they would've kept that one and used it one the DC-9's and 717's. the only modification I would have considered would be using the present font on the old color scheme and getting rid of the old "sun" logo and replacing it with the "A" that is seen today. The paint scheme itself would have remained the same.

Delta picked Tan?!? When? I don't recall hearing about or seeing any DL 757s in anything but White and polished aluminum...

I agree with Cody 100% I like the Airtran livery before the Merger.

Ehhh... AirTran flies into our airport, so I see their planes a lot. I'm not a fan of the way they look. With all the white-bodies out there, the cream/tan color doesn't make it stand out so much as it just makes the plane look dirty.

Airtran's livery is very nice, and yes, the livery prior to the merger was excellent. What was flashmeister talking about, Delta choosing tan for their 75's? I don't know why Delta would have singled out a particular aircraft model with its own scheme.

I saw a 757 at Atlanta that was Delta, and it was a tan, metal, and flag on the tail.

I love AirTran's current livery, but nothing can ever replace my beloved Critter (sniff)  .
Still, I think the current livery looks sleek and well-designed. BTW- while the tail is a good indicator of DC-9 vs. B717, I just look at the engines. JT8Ds don't have logos of Rolls Royce and BMW on them, and they certainly aren't high-bypass!

I like AirTran's livery a lot actually. It has a nice, clean, ungaudy look to it that is miles more professional than that stupid cartoon on Valujet. The whole livery change really signified an update and refousing of teh airline. Where cartoon painted planes flew cheap paying pax on vacations in an all coach layout, the new 717s fly thrifty businessmen in a 2 class layout. The livery update reflected the airline's entire operations update. Despite the Valuejet crash (which wasn't entirely the airline's fault) I am very impressed with the ATL based airline. They have fought it out well with DL, lowering fares and providing a low cost last minute alternative to FL and PA travellers. Frontier does the same with similar quality. Bravo to both!
