The Impact Of The Bali Talks On Aviation

Mon Dec 17, 2007 8:30 am

The Bali talks where developed countries have promised to reduce Greenhouse emissions over the next two decades will have ramifications on the aviation industry. While aircraft such as the A350 and B787 use more earth-friendly systems and the next generation of engines from GE, PW and RR burn far less fuel, there is little doubt that aviation will have to pay a 'price' of some sort. I wanted to start this thread to get some idea of what members of this website believe on the issue.

Thanks

I think you should also discourage discussion of the reasons for the conference at Bali, as in - "it happened, the conference and the ongoing talks at least are a fact."

Greenhouse gases have been done to death in non-aviation.

It is probable that the beginnings of the effects are already present with the fuel surcharges. It is difficult to know if the airlines realised that when they started them. Governments are likely to be quite keen to use similar devices.

It has always seemed strange to me that many countries do not charge fuel taxes on international flights. That policy may become inverted if extra charges are made.
