Condor To Discontinue MCO-FRA

Tue Dec 18, 2007 4:14 am

I saw this one coming. DE will discontinue MCO-FRA service effective 4/28/08. DE has been flying the route 2X Weekly. LH is now flying this route 6X Weekly. With MP pulling out of the AMS route, MCO-Europe capacity will take a bit of a hit. I know that we've talked about the possibility of another European carrier starting MCO, but now I definitely wonder if it might happen. With the departure of two leisure long-haul carriers the yields might improve enough for it to happen. We might see LH go Daily if nothing else.

No surprise, but Lufthansa is the better option. It's not a huge loss with LH in town. Though they are the fourth European airline to discontinue MCO in the past year or so, joining Icelandair, LTU, and Martinair. Though I think gaining Aer Lingus and Lufthansa is a good trade-off.

Don't LH own DE? I guess they are keeping the DE MCO flights for the winter for Holiday charter flights.

I was in my old "hometown" MCO two weeks ago - and it was great to see LH there, not to mention three VS744's at once and the BA 777.

I completely agree. It is a little bit of a concern that this is now four carriers departing MCO. However I do think that this will be better for MCO in the long run. I think that the presence of the long-haul leisure carriers can and has kept MCO from landing quality Transatlantic service (with the exception of LH). I hope that yields improve and MCO can possibly see AF at some point.

Plus British Airways is adding an additional 3 flights a week for a total of 10 this spring. It wouldn't surprise me if we see another European Airline come to MCO.

Over on the A departure level side around Air Jamaica, the sign is flashing "Air Italy" as if Air Italy is flying here. It was here a couple weeks back, but that was for a Space Shuttle charter I think.

Air Italy itself only does charters, so it was definitely for some sort of charter.

Any EU carrier can start it from anywhere, so you could see BA run it from MUN, for example. Not gonna happen, but anything is open now...

You're right. I was just remembering that about two years ago, Eurofly received DOT approval to start MCO but the service never started.

True...But the most likely scenario for an additional route would probably be to a large transfer hub...possibly either CDG or AMS. I don't think that KL would start AMS so soon but you never know. I would say the best possibility would be AF MCO-CDG but at this point who knows? I don't think that there is enough O&D for any additional service without the benefit of the large transfer hub at the other end...I think CDG would be perfect. I do know that MCO has been talking to AF and pushing for the route. It looks like now is the time for MCO to put up a great incentive package if they really want the service to happen.

Eurofly was also charters, but the flight was moved to MIA not long before it was going to start. It was to be MXP-MCO-FPO-MXP.

Considering Martinair is pulling out, and they are 50% owned by KLM and operate leisure routes, I doubt it.

To be fair, though, Orlando retained FI service through SFB.
