New Google Earth Pic Of LAX... What A Mess!

Tue Dec 18, 2007 5:47 pm

Google Earth has updated the LAX area with a new photograph. It shows on the program, but not on their website version.
Can anyone estimate the approximate date?

1. The new runway 25L/7R seems to have been finished for a long time, judging by the rubber. However, the center taxiway seems far far away from completion. Why so slow construction? Even at LHR, they build taxiways faster than that.
2. The new A380 gate on the North side of TBIT is underway.
3. The new A380 gate on the South side of TBIT is ridiculous. If an A380 parks at that gate, the adjacent gate will not be able to handle anything larger than a 767.
3. On the North concourse of TBIT, what exactly is happening next to the main building?
4. It seems that the remote gates 206, 207, 212, and 216 have two jetways now, I am assuming for the A380. However, on gate 212 and 216, the jetway is connected on the other side. Will they board the plane from both sides?
5. When will demolition start for the new midfield concourse?

Is that really a big concern? Not all planes at TBIT are 747s, 777s and A340s. There are a number of narrowbodies that use that terminal.

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/105392/

This is my trip report from July, ExpressJet SAN-BFL-SAN. Both times we flew directly over LAX.

There are several photographs of LAX showing all the terminals and the new runway.

As for Google Images, it's interesting how so many remote places have incredible pictures, yet locations that are "not so remote" have poor images. It's all in how frequently they update!

Even San Diego's Petco Park, which has been opened since April, 2004, is still shown as under construction.

The Tom Bradley International Terminal. It's the big one with arms that span both the north and south sides of the terminal complex.

Don't get too excited about TBIT. It's a dump of a terminal. I believe they are renovating it but you can only put so much lipstick on a pig.  Wink

That is a major runway project that has involved moving, and lengthening one runway, completely resurfacing another and still having to have planes taxi between the two while a new center taxiway is built. Those things take time.

It gets the job done.

OK,

The remote gates have had those multiple jetways for a while.

The center taxi-way is taxing its time because the 25's are in operation. When they rebuilt 25L only 25R was open, so they had greater flexibility to work. All they had to worry about were ops going to the cargo/imperial ramps. They also had a performance/budget timeline for 25L, and they came in under budget and ahead of schedule. That meant a BIG bonus.

I believe the addition to the north side of TBIT is for TSA and lounges. Carriers such as Mexicana, AeroCalifornia (if they come back), TACA and Alaska all use narrowbody aircraft at the TBIT. LAN, LOT, and Aeroflot all use a 767. I think they knew when building the 380 gates that with one parked, they'd lose a gate, but it's a price LAWA and the airlines are willing to pay.

That is the way a lot of infrastructure projects are handled here in California, to much success.

That gate at the top of the picture has a second jetway, which comes out on the lower side. How will that be used?

More than happy to provide answers, Kaitak:

Phllax's answer is roughly spot on. The runway project was scoped in such a fashion to minimize the length of the closure. It also helped that the weather was better beyond expectations.

The taxiway project was phased with consideration that both 7/25s would be in operation. Additional safeguards are in place which occassionally affect the work. To compensate, 7L/25R is closed weekends to accomodate construction (An FYI - LAX typically has 200-250 fewer ops p/day Sat. and Sun. vs. during the week). In addition, there have been "finds" which have resulted in 'beyond scope' issues that have slowed progress. Also, there have been a few days of wind events that resulted in cessation of work for the remaonder of that particular day.

2. The new A380 gate on the North side of TBIT is underway.

TBIT in line baggage screening facility and additional airline administrative office space.

Yes, both jetways will be used. The 380 will nose in at an angle to allow simultaneous use of both jetways.

Good question. AA's lease on the former TW hangar runs through mid-2010. Last I heard, LAWA had been in negotiations with AA regarding that area. LAWA wants to open the new facility by 2012 - I'd guess that demolition would have to begin by late '08 / early '09. There should be concrete info (i.e. timeline) available on this very soon.

Are all the main TBIT gates on the Northend of the concourse operational now? I know when they were doing the construction for the A380 able gate @ 123, MX was boarding with stairs and in general the whole are looks like just a mess.
I remember those bubble like tents from back when T2 was the international terminal. What are these being used for now? Really obstructs the view as well..

No. Gate 123 is tentatively scheduled to reopen in February '08. The adjacent gate 122, which was being used as a hardstand gate, is now closed in order to wrap up the 123 project. Also, since assemblage of the girders forming the TBIT Inline structure has been completed, gate 119 has reopened as a hardstand gate.

Aaway, Thankyou for the information.
With MX having so many flights out of TBIT, what gates are they utilizing for the most part? Using jetways or requiring stairs or remote parking?
