Will Delta Ever Return To Chennai?

Tue Dec 18, 2007 9:30 pm

I wondered why Delta pulled out of MAA. Was it because of poor loads? Bragging rights to be the only U.S. carrier to serve India non-stop from the U.S.? (no longer true) It seemed like a unique destination, I was sad when Delta pulled out. Will it ever return with the 772LR? I suppose Delta would want to attack DEL first and I'm sure they have bigger fish to fry in East Asia. Would Delta ever consider a one-stop service again via CDG, FRA, or perhaps LGW? Thoughts?

The next US carrier to fly to Chennai will be CO nonstop from EWR with a 787, CO has stated with the delivery of their 787s they intend to launch nonstop flights from EWR to Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The 787 is the right aircraft for routes like Chennai and Bangalore from the US, currently CO and NWA are the only US carriers with 787 orders.
Eastern Air lines flt # 701, EWR-MCO Boeing 757

No ... CO would be the one with bragging right (EWR-DEL) then AA follow after with non stop USA India so what DL did was in short "Keep up with the Jones". If nothing was done by DL you would have newcomer's like CO and AA stealing DL USA - India market share.

Wasn't the route a one-stop at CDG or somewhere else in Europe?

Air France picked up the route at the exact same time Delta dropped it.

This wasn't just cooincidence, it was planning between two very close partners. I don't think it was a profitability issue. If I remember A-net posts at the time, DL withdrew from MAA because, believe it or not, they needed the already-configured 763 (as opposed to waiting for a domestic bird conversion) for another route at the time that simply demanded a BizElite configuration. In fact I believe it was to get JFK-GRU off the ground a the same time JFK-LGW needed BizE 763's.

In some ways I think this was a good move for AF and DL and shows how 2 parties can cooperate to create a win-win situation. Ultimately all flights operated by AF/DL are code shared and sold by both airlines (at least on AF's daily 772 BLR service) - similar to the way NW and KL operate in India. To the end customer it makes practically no difference, since he gets the same connection via CDG. However to DL, it allowed them to deploy the a/c on a route closer home, while AF could expand it's India operations without have to start from scratch on building a route.
