Regionals Are The Best!

Mon Aug 28, 2000 1:20 pm

This year alone I have made over 35 trips on SkyWest Airlines from SFO-SMF. What I have noticed with journeys on SkyWest and other Regional carriers is that the morale of the crew is higher, the stress level of flying is reduced. I was on a flight yesterday and the loads were 4/30 pax, with 1 S/A. That S/A was me!   The flight attendant, was laughing and smiling, along with telling jokes! She even put a little plastic fly in the co-pilots juice, just as a joke! He had an interesting emotion on his face when I left the plane.

What are your thoughts on Regional Carriers? I love them.

I think the majors should take a lesson from their little cousins. I flew on America West Express, Mesa Airlines, from Phoenix to Eugene and from the gate crew to the cabin and cockpit crew the friendliness and helpfulness could not be beaten. On the way out the captain told us our exact routing. The f/a's both ways were really friendly... always smiling and really seemed to enjoy their jobs. I would definately jump on another Mesa-air CRJ.

I agree. Regionals do have somewhat of a better attitude among employees. Maybe it's because they simply don't have the massive amounts of people to take care of like at the majors.
It's kind of strange actually. Sometimes I've seen more gate agents at the gate for a prop flight than I have seen for a large airliner.
Does anyone know when SkyWest will be replacing the EMB's for something else? I don't know exactly how old they are but I was recently on a SAN-LAX trip and thought the interior could use a bit of refurbishing.
I know RJ's are simply in the picture on the west coast yet, but any news on any a/c we can see in the future on these routes?

Skywest got all the Brasilias it could find when it was awarded the United Airlines West Coast operation.. so some of the EM2s aren't in tip top condition.

skywest will be allowed to fly up to 25 CRJs under the United Express banner.... so I don't think LAX-SAN will ever see the CRJ.. maybe on the peak timed flights.

The 30 seater turboprop market presently doesn't have a replacement that is being manufactured... except for the 37 seat Dash 8 Q200.

THe LAX-SAN route is already seeing jets, in the form of 737s (UA) and an A319 (NW). I would not mind connecting in LAX more in the future, though, if RJs were added to the schedules.

I was talking to a few CSR's at SFO who work for SkyWest and they said that as of 10/01/00 CRJs will be flying under UA Express from Denver-Fresno. With more joining the fleet, they may go from Fresno to SFO. The SFO-PSP trip is a long one. It could get a CRJ also.

I haven't read the other posts yet, but I DO stand corrected.. I completely forgot about the 32 seat DoDo prop as a 30 seat prop presently being manufactured... (Dornier 328)

SkyWest Is The Best!

As a pilot for SkyWest Airlines I really appreciate your post. We are a great airline with crews who love to fly and have a great time doing it. Everyone I've flown with in the last year I've been with the company has been top-notch. We're a relatively young work force which adds to the atmosphere.

As SegmentKing said earlier, the Brasilias will not be going away any time soon (until United lifts it's scope clause). The RJs coming into the United system right now will be expansion routes. Denver to Fresno, CA, and Denver to Bozeman, MT. More to come, but nobody knows where yet.

I fly the NW system (PDX, SEA) where we have the runts of the fleet. Most of the EMBs up here used to be Comair, Mesa, and WestAir. If you're looking at a SKYW Brasilia and the registration # ends in "SW" it was purchased directly from Embraer. We have a few "CA" that were Comair, and some "YV" that were Mesa. Then there are a couple obscure ones that I don't know where they came from. If you see a SW airplane with N5XXSW you know it's fairly new (1997ish). Anything in the N2XXSW were from the original group that SkyWest bought. Most of those are flying in SkyWest colors for Delta in Salt Lake City. I was flying one of the non-SW airplanes and the airworthiness cert. was issued in 1989. They're not real old airplanes, just high mileage!

Keeping the pointy end forward!

Does anyone think SkyWest will be able to get more RJs with the forthcoming IPO, or do you think the money will be used in some other way?

the IPO is only for additional shares being offered.. they are already a publicly traded company.. it's just a way to raise more $$$ for them..... and yes, part of the funding will go to pay for new aircraft. But not all of it.

Yeah, pretty new. I've been visiting this site off and on for a while. It doesn't seem to work well with MS Explorer. I recently downloaded Netscape and it works like a charm. Seeya!
