Lady Penelope is from the 1960's tv series Thunderbirds by Gerry Anderson. You must have heard of Thunderbirds? It was re-made into a film a few years ago! Tubular Belle is I think a play on words, Tubular Bells was a very famous album by Mick Oldfield who I'm not sure might have been signed to Mr Bransons Virgin record label? Mustang Sally is from the film The Commitments!
Hope this helps?

Wonder if Madame Whiplash might be an appropriate name for a future Virgin Bird.

and also, perhaps, at the same time, a nod to a hero of Sir Richard Branson's, namely Sir Freddie Laker RIP, whose DC10s operated on the SkyTrain flights with similar names - I remember seeing 'Canterbury Belle' for one..
maybe someone can recall others?

Mustang Sally might have been introduced to a new generation by The Commitments but the original song is much older. It was recorded by Mack Rice in 1965 but gained greater polularity when covered by Wilson Pickett in the following year. You might remember that Mr. Pickett was mentioned several times in the film and was supposedly in the limo at the end.

Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett, "Ridee Sallyy Ridee"" what a great song!

I still play that tune with my band,

Jordan would be very apt for a Virgin A380, she is hardly Vigin but been around the world a fair few times, probably with only a vanity case for luggage!

Hey Guys,

Below is a link listing all names of the current fleet. An interesting note is that G-VFAB known as Lady Penelope (from Thunderbirds TV show) was renamed Spice One by The Spice Girls in "honour" of their reunion this month.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Atlantic_Airways_Fleet

Tinker Belle - named after the Peter Pan character (Ironically, Reg: G-VBIG)
Diana - I presume is named after the late HRH Princess Diana (Reg: G-VFAR)
Sleeping Beauty - Obviously from the Disney story Sleeping Beauty (Reg: G-VNAP)
Pretty Woman - Most likely after the movie (Reg: G-VROY)
Claudia Nine - Named after Claudia Schiffer (Reg: G-VSHY)
Dancing Queen - probably after the ABBA hit in the 60's (Reg: G-VFIT)

As for the others, most are a play on words, or just creative naming to coincide with a route launch. For example: G-VGOA named "Indian Princess" I would presume was named in honour to their India routes.

Regards,

Claudia Nine - Named after Claudia Schiffer (Reg: G-VSHY)

G-VSHY was named "Claudia Nine" as a PR stunt on delivery. She was renamed "Madame Butterfly" afterwards (more in line with SHY)
Several "ladies" are created to match the registration: "Cover Girl" for VOGE, "Rainbow Lady" for SUN, "Dragon Lady" for FLY, "Scarlet Lady" for RED, "Sleeping Beauty" for NAP, "Indian Princess" for GOA, "Silver Lady" for FOX, ...
The one which beats me is "Emmeline Heaney" for G-VYOU.

No. After Roy Orbison's hit record of that name - hence the registration G-VROY.

Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells was the very first album released by Virgin Records

Mike Oldfield has absolutely earned to have his name on Virgins aircrafts.
Tubular Bells was a huge success and kept Virgin Records alive for a long time until they found other successful singers/bands. Without Mike Oldfield, Virgin wouldn't been what they are today.

SRB must like them alot, as they were not Virgin artists. They had their own record label, POLAR Music.

The name for this aircraft was auctioned for charity. Mr Heaney was the highest bidder and named the aircraft "Emmeline Heaney" after his daughter.

The lady on the nose of the aircraft was inspired by the artwork of Alberto Vargas hence the A340-600 G-VGAS "Varga Girl"

Isn't there a "Tinkerbelle" in the fleet? If so, then we all know where she came from, the lil' slut...
