JFK Terminal 5 And JetBlue... What Will Happen?

Thu Dec 20, 2007 6:37 pm

After reading about JFK Terminal 5 and jetBlue making T5 its new home, I have wondered what will happen to the interior decor? Will jetBlue retain the historical ticket counters in the main terminal, or will they modernize it.

It would be a damn shame to see the old historical 1960s decor go.

What is the "Master Plan" for completion, and are there any artist renditions of what it may look like?

Thanks.

Are there any pictures or renditions of what is currently going on with the terminal? I would love to fly in there when it is completed, but if they do away with all the historical stuff, I might as well not even bother.

The Saarinen terminal building is a protected landmark. The flight wings (gates) were demolished, and the new B6 terminal wraps around the historic terminal where the flight wings stood and will be connected to the Saarinen structure by the original "tubes" that connected the flight wings to the terminal building. It's TBD exactly what function the TWA building will serve as part of the new T5 complex, but it's generally thought that a museum, cafe's, etc will be present, as well as B6 e-ticket kiosks. The main B6 check-in desks will be in the new building however. The historic info desk, sunken lounge, and all the core interior components of the Saarinen building will remain.
An unexamined life isn't worth living.

Are there any renditions that show this. I can't really picture it in my head. What will happen to T6, or will they operate out of T6 as well.

In speaking with Project Managers about T5, the last word from them is that actual construction will be complete sometime in the summer (June-July 2008) and then after a few months of testing the new building systems, the grand opening is slated for Sep-Oct 2008.

For a while, there will be flights leaving and arriving from both T6 and Partially T5. T5 Will be opened in stages.

Down the road there are tentative plans to demolish T6 completely and expand T5 to allow for more gates and customs processing (2009-2010). I've seen the proposed blueprints myself.

So all-in-all, when will T5 construction be complete.. That means T6 being demolished, and T5 being expanded... When will the ENTIRE project be officially complete.

It looks like they are bypassing the old T5 altogether. I can't wait to be able to go in there.
