Northeast Airlines And Newport, Vermont.

Fri Dec 21, 2007 2:46 am

Is there anyone out there that might be able to find a picture of or know anyone that has a picture of a Northeast Airlines Fairchild Hiller FH-227C at Newport State Airport in Newport, Vermont? I would be interested to know...The runways there are terribly short and I would love to actualy see one of the planes at the terminal.....I have seen the Northeast Schedules from that time period when they had the FH-227Cs and they did fly in there....

On a side note, I am also looking for any pictures of an Ozark Air Lines FH-227Bs shot at the Iowa City, Iowa Airport...

I would like to add these to my FH-227 website.....Any help would be appreciated....

Cheers, Access-Air

I am not sure f NE actually flew the FH-227s into Newport. In the mid to late 60s, when NE had the FH-227s, the really small stations like Newport and Laconia had a commuter/contract carrier doing the flying for them. This may have happened after the DC-3s left and they didn't have the right equipment to use into the very small stations.

I have looked at a Northeast schedule myself for 1967 a year after NE got the FH-227s and they did indeed fly them into Newport....The flights were listed at that time as either JET or PJet....The commuter services with Executive didnt come along until later on closer to the early 70s....right before NE was merged into DL....Northeast flew the plane from ESF to BTV then MPV then LEB then EEN then on to LGA if I remember the schedule correctly....

p.s. I will add that back in 1989, I actually visited the Newport, Vt. Airport and asked soem locals there, and they had affirmed the FH-227 did serve Newport, juts that no one as far as they were aware, took the time to photograph it...I am quite sure that someone would have had to photographed a relative getting on or off the FH-227....

Good Info Access-Air. This prompted me to go looking and in mid 1969, the Newport Services were conducted by Northern Airways, 2 flights a day to BTV, 30 minutes duration. Was Northern a predecessor to Precision?

The Rockland, ME flights, all to BOS, were handled by Downeast Airways and the Laconia flights, also to BOS, were operated by Cape & Islands Air Services, Inc.

More research, per Wikipedia, Northern Airways became Air north and then in 1984 Brockway. Wiki claims that the original Northern fleet consisted of DH-6 Otters, so that probably was what they replaces the NE FH-227s with.
