Clinton Trip To Nigeria A/c Question

Mon Aug 28, 2000 3:03 pm

If Bill flew on the 747,

then who flew on this?

I believe this is a 757. Does it have the range to go Washington - Abuja? Did he make Chelsea fly on a different plane ?

Usually, there are two Air Force 747's that travel with the President. One 'Air Force One' is for the imporant people and the president, and Air Force two carries the other staff and the vice president. Al Gore has been using the 757 as Air Force 2. did he goto Africa too?

It's likely the 757 was used for extra staff, press, security, etc. It is not uncommon during a presidential visit to see Air Force One, several support aircraft and one dedicated for media.

When Bill Clinton visited Copenhagen - for 24 hours - a couple of years ago he arrived on two VC-25A (747-200) and three Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. Did somebody mention "overweight luggage"?
The C-5s brought a few armoured cars (our Quien unfortunately doesn't own such a thing - she uses an open, golden coach instead). And three large Navy helicopters.
The helicopters substituted the airport taxi - the president was wellcomed at the Quien's summer cottage 30 miles away from the airport.
The three helicopters arrived from three different angles, and the president landed in the last one to arrive on the front lawn. According to what we saw on TV the first two helicopters carried "nothing". I don't believe that

There is more than one C-32A (757). Initial order was for two, not sure if more were ordered and delivered.

Gore is probably using one to campaign, and they are probably using the other for press and other staff (as mentioned above). Also, the two 747s don't usually travel together, the other is a backup. And Air Force One is the call sign of ANY aircraft the President is on board.

By the way, the three helicopter routine is probably for security, so that they don't know which the President is really on.

The first aircraft to land arrives some time before the one the president arrives in. It's purpose is to provide transport for the presidential limo and the support vehicles (such as the Suburbans that drive ahead and behind the limos). Secret Service agents also arrive on this flight and they establish the perimeter. Since these are the last agents to arrive before the president, it is very likely that another load of agents and security personnel has arrived days ahead. These are the sharpshooters deployed on the rooftops at the airport and at the locations where the President is expected to travel. Also these are the ones that seal all the manholes and postal boxes shut, etc. All this has to happen way before the support aircraft arrives. The security personnel are most likely moved on Air Force planes a couple of days ahead. Sometimes, as the case was when Clinton visited Pakistan, there are more than two aircraft arriving at the same time. In Pakistan, VC-25 arrived carrying the "dummy" Clinton. The President was actually aboard a military transport jet, not sure of the type, painted in normal Air Force gray.
