Red-eye Flight

Wed Aug 30, 2000 4:16 am

There is a report from USA Today on August 29, 2000 talked about Red-eye flight.

Red-eye flight means the flight that departs at midnight and arrives in the morning. And a statistic shows that more US travellers choosing the red-eye flight (especially West coast, due to time zones). For example: The load factor of United Airlines' red-eye flight was more than 80%, about 64% increases to the year before.

Will you take the red-eye flight? and how about travelling on a International red-eye flight?

I always take red eye flights to europe. It makes it alot easier to get use to the time change. If you are in first or business its very nice to take the red eye. I try to take the red eye as often as possible because you can sleep in the plane and wake up refreshed in ur destination.

Problem with red eye flights for me is that if I leave here(Los Angeles) at night, I arrive in Europe at night. If you sleep in the plane, you're pretty much screwed for an extra day once you arrive.

I like red-eye flights much better but I don't usually take them because it tends to inconvenience the people I'm staying with if I arrive at 4:00 in the morning.

I like them. I don't mind flying at night, but what I hate is flying when the sun is setting. There is this sort of weird feeling in the cabin, and I don't like it. I prefer morning flights, like the one that leaves at 6:00am or even before that!

I like red-eyes, but I can't really sleep on planes. The flight from IAH to CDG leaves around 5:00, and gets into Paris at about 10:00 AM. There is nothing more beautiful than a sunrise at 35,000 feet from an airplane. I always look out the window at the starts, and the early morning sky.

Most transatlantic flights are redeyes because it is more efficient for the airlines, plus westbound passengers don't have to depart in the middle of the night. Day flights, statistically, are easier for your body to contend with because you can go to your hotel or home and right to bed.

I can't sleep on planes either, so I do my best to keep myself hydrated, try to shut my eyes and nap for at least a couple of hours and accept the fact I'm going to be a zombie for the next 24 hours.

I took a red-eye LAS-CLE on Continental Airlines about four years ago. I left LAS at 1:00 AM local time and arrived in CLE just after 7:00 AM local time. I think I may have slept for some of the trip but I didn't have to work that day so I got quite a bit of sleep after I got back home.

I also took what amounted to a red-eye JFK-MAN with my family. We were supposed to depart JFK at 6:00 PM, but you know how that goes... Wheels up at about 9:30 PM local time and we got to MAN at about 10:00 AM local time the next morning. I was jet-lagged for a week.
