Whiter And Whiter

Thu Aug 31, 2000 7:04 am

I don't know if this question has a real answer, but I was wondering why airlines are so eagerly heading toward all-white color schemes. In some cases they look elegant, but in most cases they look so bland and dirty. Since the 1990s, most airlines seem to be opting for this minimilist look. Why is this?
Whatever happened to cheat-lines, colorful bellies and engines?

Look at the images of the Gulfair special 50th anniversary schemes on the A330/A340/767s. Now that's what I call a color scheme!

PS talking of color schemes, why do British Airway's 757s have little black rings around their noses? It's not on any of their other jets? I

I do agree that many airlines seem to be doing a white-painted plane with liveries only on the tail and the upper front fuselage of the plane.

It seems the only airlines in 2000 that seem to have colorful liveries (e.g., colors not dominated by white) are:

American Airlines
United Airlines
Southwest Airlines
Northwest Airlines
Hawaiian Airlines
Midwest Express
Asiana Airways
Korean Airlines
KLM Airlines
Aer Lingus
British Midland Airlines

RE: Pmk, I think you're right!
White paint is cheap and so is the quality of service we are getting now on airlines.
I cannot stand all white jets, they are so boring! I cant believe that British Airways and Air Canada went to this color scheme.
My favorite colors are:
American Airlines
Southwest (I used to hate! Now appretiate its uniqueness)
Deltas old and second (not the new one)

My favorite is Olympic Airways A-340

If they just went for the money, they´d paint them not at all: less weight - less fuel.

I wouldn't classify BA as a "white" carrier". There is plenty of color on those birds.

It's funny, no one ever said anything about Air France with their totally white fuselages, blue lettering and tail emblem. Though I never thought of their livery as boring. Now that there are so many other white-body liveries, Air France just blends in.

Sorry to disappoint some of you but have you seen Malaysia Airlines' new paint scheme - all white...

...but they have plumped for a unique royal blue tail which tapers at an odd angle above the rear cabin. Thank go they got rid of that horrid 'Kite' and replaced it with the regal star and crescent - Malaysia's emblem.

Incidently - the kite IS special to Malaysia but somehow MAS managed to distort it into that hideous shape over the years. I DO hope they keep a little kite by the its a local symbol of perpetual flight.

Yeah and what about Air Canada and their white fuselage, red letters, and maple leaf on black backround.
I prefer the old Air Canada with the encircled maple leaf and broad red cheatlines.

That Air Canada background on the tail is dark green, not black. All the same, I find that AC's scheme is very attractive and I prefer it to the old one. It is simple yet very classy.

White planes are not necessarily ugly as long as some sort of thought goes into their tail emblem, cheatlines or even the lettering. BWIA's new Dash 8s, for example, are white with the old BWIA logo on the tail, pink on the dorsal tail fairing, green on the nacelles and the "BWee Express" lettering in pink. All in all, a very beautiful scheme.

Hop to it, fly for life!

Anything beats Southwests paint job. Those Southwest planes look like big flying pieces of hippie dog poop. They even had a unique paint scheme that flew into the airport the other day, it looked like a giant flying "hotdog"
