Canadian Airlines going up or down?

Sun Mar 07, 1999 4:57 pm

What do you guys and gals think of Canadian
Airlines? I personally think their own goverment
is screwing them over big time! They need help
from the outside (AA or merger). Canadian is
a nice airline and I have talked to a few of their
pilots and their very nice people (most Canadians are)
and I wish them great sucess, but they can't get it.
I think if AA or somebody where to merge with Canadian
it might able them get some new aircraft. Which they
need desperatly! That B737200 that comes into SAN
is not looking to good. Comments?

CP has very good image here in São Paulo, using 763s. But I think they should replace their B737s by A320s.

How about a merger with Aircanada? What do you think?
Since they both have 767s A320s and 747s[Any ohters?] I think it would be good.

That would create a monopoly on the canadian airline industry. That would not be good for anyone and would probably not be allowed.

Canadian is in the processing of looking at the 737NG or A320 as a replacement for their 737-200s. Air Canada and Canadian serve two different types of Canadians. French Canadians and Canadians.

Canadian is good.

I like Canadian. I really like the new paint job on their 747-400's!!! I'm not sure about the Canadian Goose, but the rest looks wonderful!! I must agree with whomever posted a thing about their 737's. When they're at SFO, they look and sound HORRIBLE!!!!! I believe, though that they are infact ordering A320's for that very replace the 737.

I think I should comment on my employer. The 737's are old and some need replacing. The economy in Canada for the airline isn't really good for us. Canadian is a major port to North America from Asia. I don't want to use the Asian flu as an excuse but there really isn't any other. In reference to AirCanada A320'scomment about merging with Air Canada, you obviously don't know what a monopoly is do you?

Go Orange!

Tue Mar 09, 1999 4:59 am

I grew up in Vancouver and have a soft spot for CP. In the old days of Ottawa-controlled Air Canada vs. CP Air there was no choice: take the Orange!

As far as having a goose on the tail, let us not forget that prior to the orange scheme in 1968, Canadian Pacific had a goose.

I've been out of touch with the goings-on with route structure, but it seems to me that Air Canada has been encroaching on Asia, typically a CP stronghold, and I have to wonder if CP has been able to obtain some sort off reciprocal benefit (Europe, etc.).

Any comments?

AA already owns a good chunk of Canadian. Federal law prohibits a foreign company from owning more than that. They have already replaced many of their 737-200s with A320s. I'm at the airport in Toronto frequently and they are all over the place. The government has nothing to do with it. Even if they were owned by someone else entirely, it would not change the situation in the Canadian airline industry where too many seats are chasing too few passengers. That's why Canadian keeps posting loss after loss. Air Canada got them first. Surely you're not suggesting that some profitable airline buy a turkey and throw good money after bad?
