Hawaiian Replacement For The DC-10

Tue Sep 05, 2000 3:35 am

Does anyone know when or even if Hawaiian Airlines is planning to replace the DC-10 anytime soon? If so, what are likely aircraft candidates? i think there will be a combined 767-300/767-400 order.

I would think eventually they would get a more modern fleet, although they just received some used DC10's for their flights shuttling Renaissance Cruise passengers from LAX to PPT. They seem to be increasing flights of late as well, increasing the daily SFO-HNL to 2x daily, adding SAN-HNL, the HNL-PPT to 2X weekly and they fly from HNL-Pago Pago 2x weekly not to mention the 3 daily flights from LAX. These are all primarily leisure routes, so they might just stick with the 10 for a while. They are replacing their DC9's with 717's though... By the way, I've often heard they offer a o/w, space available, at time of check in business upgrade of $150 or something (I've heard about that on their Tahiti flights to HNL). Anybody know if this exists to mainland?

I think because of the relatively small size of Hawaiian Airlines, it's unlikely they will phase out their DC-10 fleet if plentiful spares are available. Hawaiian's DC-10 fleet is pretty well-maintained, and will likely continue to fly with the airline for another 7-8 years.

It also depends on if the airline wants to get ETOPS certification. If they do get ETOPS certification, then very likely Hawaiian will buy 7-8 Boeing 767-400's to fly between the US West Coast, Hawaii, and the South Pacific islands.

They are going to buy the A330-300. 7 of them.

I doubt that.

I too doubt that HA will go for the A330. I think the DC-10's will be with HA for quite some time. HA gets good lease terms for the 10's from American. Eventually though, the 10's will be phased out and I think HA will opt for the 763 or 764. If not new 767's then second hand ones. Who knows, maybe AA will lease some 767's to HA one day like they did with the DC-10's.

I think HA_DC9 hit the nail right on the head. For HA's operation a low cost-well maintained airplane makes far better sense than to buy/lease a new widebody. The timing would be correct in 5-7 yrs for them to take several of AA's first 763's.

They also have a marketing pact with AA.That makes it a closer relationship.

I doubt AA will lease a 763 to HA, given that the seating of the D10 is a bit larger than a 763 (and because AA is heavily using the 763 fleet for USA transcon and Latin American flights).

HA will continue to fly the D10 for about 7-8 years, then will likely replace them with the 764ER.

Agree with much of the above. Hawaiian isn't made of money. They can't afford to just pick up some 767-400ER. I think it's highly logical that they'll keep the dc10s for another 7-8 years like said above and than maybe upgrade to some used M11s. Maybe from American. I think thats a natural addition just as the 717 was for the DC9.

I thought AA was getting rid of their M11's? I thought most, if not all of them, went to FedEx for freighter conversion. Does AA still have M11's in service and if so, on what routes?

I hope they hang on to there DC-10s for as long as possible. Hawaiian Airlines DC-10s are one of the most beautiful jets in the sky. It looks so vintage an I like seeing them take-off from SFO. I live 10 miles away from SFO and I can spot a Hawaiian DC-10 miles away.
If they were to replace them, I hope it would be a MD-11, 747(any series), or an A340. I doubt they would use an A340.
Just look at this jet!
