Lufthansa 757-300 Tests

Tue Sep 05, 2000 11:44 pm

I read on an earlier thread that LH is going to test one of Condor's 753's.

Can anyone answer the following for me?:

1) On what route/routes will LH be testing the 753?

2) When will the test begin and when is it projected to end?

3) What existing equipment is the 753 being considered as a replacement/augmentation for?

4) What is the turn around time for the current equipment operating on the routes LH will be testing the 753 on?

5) What is the desired turn around time LH is shooting for?

I think the 753 would be a nice addition to LH's fleet. It will be interesting to see how the tests progress.

In terms of capacity, the 753 would match LH's A310. So it could be a replacment for the aging Airbusses.

That'd also be my guess.

Sorry, I just posted on the 757-300 thread. Here is what I know - LH is testing the 753 on the FRA-MUC runs. The 45 min turnaround is a requirement. Currently the route is flown mainly by A300/310s (and some 737/A320s), so they might be looking at the 753 the replace the Airbus widebodies on domestic runs.

The proposed Airbus replacement - the A330-500 will have the disadvantage of being a double shrink, i.e. not the best economics one might expect on short flights. So this looks like a good chance for LH to find an alternative. Especially after they have publicly stated that the 753 is the most economical aircraft in their fleet (incl. Condor).

Is this plane going to be painted in LH colours? What about the interior? When are these flights going to take place?

It would be great if they repainted it, but I think if the trials are only going to last for several weeks or a few months they wouldn't bother.

Hmm, well I think in that case I would be rather offended to have to fly Condor when I booked Lufthansa - that is, if they didn´t announce before that it would be a kind of "code share".
But anyway, they had painted the DC8 in LH colours, and those trial didn´t last very long either; don´t know about the interiour, though.

Wouldn't LH have to totally reconfigure the cabin in order to perform an adequate test? They'll have to change it from a high-density charter layout to a two-class, leather seat layout with the kind of pitch that German business travellers have grown accustomed to. They'll probably just slap "Lufthansa" decals over the Condor titles on the outside.

Boy.. if this works... what a boost for the 753!

Lufthansa has been a pretty good customer for Boeing products in the past. Remember, they were the launch customer for the 731. It would be nice to see them ordering 753's from Boeing in the future.

Just a bit of info from this week's Flight International on the Condor/Lufthansa 757-300 trial. Lufthansa have already said the A330-500 is not viable for short-haul operations because it is too heavy and the wingspan is too large for short sectors. They are really looing for an A300-600 replacement on short sectors, no mention of replacing the smaller A310 (this will probably be replaced by A321)

The aircraft will be leased for 3 weeks in November.

The airlines still have to work out how to fit moveable cabin dividers between Business and Economy, which is difficult on Condor's aircraft due to them having centreline video screens.

While it decides on an A300-600 replacement, Lufthansa will take an ex-Emirates aircraft to boost their fleet.

I´d like to see B757´s in LH fleet, I havn´t been on any 757 before but have heard mostly good things about them. I guess they would be available for a pretty good price. I think the only thing what would make it less comfortable compared to A300`s is the single aisle while boarding.

Anybody of you have dates, times, flight-numbers? I´d like to fly on one of these trials.
By the way, did you know that the 753 is called Angst-Roehre (tube of fear) or Flying Pencil in Germany, due to the fact that it´s the longest single aisle twin engine aircraft ever built?

Airsicknessbag,

I checked out the LH timetable on their website for the month of November and couldn't find anything.

Good hunting. Post a thread if you find anything out.
