The Future Of Burke-Lakefront?

Wed Sep 06, 2000 12:55 am

I previously wrote about the future of Continental and its hub at Cleveland. I also spoke of Burke-Lakefront. I have flown out of there for over a year while working on my private. I can't figure out why the airport isn't used more, especially by commercial airlines. I would think that Continental Express could use it. Or I could also see Continental and the city pushing other airlines in there to allow Continental to expand at Hopkins. BKL has a nice terminal and plenty of room to accomadate up to 10 planes on the ramp at once. The two parallel runways could accomodate all the general, corporate and commercial traffic. 6L/24R is 6,500ft. which is almost or as long as the runways at LGA, DCA and Orange County. I've seen 727's, 757's and A300's in there for corporate and charter (mainly sports teams) Greater Cleveland could easily support it and it would be so convienant for the business traveler. It's only 1.5 miles from downtown. I would think that Southwest would be a perfect fit there and maybe an airline like Air Tran or maybe Midway. It's a shame to see such a nice facility go to waste. The airport also has plenty of room for expansion of hangers, terminal, parking etc.. Please inform me of any information about this subject. I think better use of this airport would be great for the city.

Back years ago, Midway Airlines (ex-Chicago Midway's hub late '80's). Midway used be flying DC-9-30 from Midway to Cleveland's Burke Lakefront daily flights three times a day.

I was thinking in my head a long time ago, Southwest should serve this airport for perfect closer city and less traffic airport like Dallas Love, Houston Hobby and Detriot Metro (used be Detroit City) and Chicago Midway. Southwest should flying into airport someday.

I have one question, is this the airport that the CART racing series uses for one of their racing courses?

Yes it is the same airport used for the CART race. They'd have to cancel flights so the cars can run.

I see some potential, but not as much as you do. Maybe some Express business service to LGA, BOS, DCA, MDW... but beyond that though. It would solely be O&D only. Maybe best served by the smaller ERJ-135.

Stay out of CART racing cars out of the airport! They should built on it's own race track. What if the plane took off from Hopkins and all engines fails? What happen if CART racing at Lakefront airport and how could the plane bring down for emergency landing? They should stay out of it! It would be great save more lives! It does make a sense!

I see your point and agree with you 100% Big777Jet. Anyway, didn't Cleveland just get a new racetrack? Back to the topic, maybe ASA could do two flights a day to ATL or Comair to CVG?

Question: Are the city government and corporate interests encouraging airline development at Burke-Lakefront? Without government and corporate backing expect the airport to remain a GA field. When CART is racing the airport is closed to air traffic. I think its a great venue for CART.

What is the largest aircraft that regularly serves CLE? 757? That says something about the market size.

Why should I fly into Burke to go downtown when I can fly into Hopkins and hop a RTA train to downtown?

All one has to do is look at ProAir trying to stay alive at DET while everybody body else is at DTW.

Cleveland is not New York or Chicago or Los Angeles.

Cleveland IS a great city and there are so many things to see and do there. It is just not yet a large enough market to warrant wide body airliners or two airports that provide passenger service.

I am a big CART fan and the race at the airport in Clevland is one of there best races. It's a flat, fast, and wide open road course wich allows for great passing.Closeing that airport for 4 days isn't going to hurt anybody. I think that they need to find more airports to run at. How about the Rochester International Airport, closeing it down for a weekend wouldn'd even matter.

Copied from my reply in "Cleveland/Continental Hub":

N766UA: Who says the Air Show and the Grand Prix won't be evicted from BKL if an airline comes in with a lucrative offer for commuter service? Anyway, while Mike White is mayor, any kind of sleazy deal could happen.

Unfortunately Mike White's administration hasn't shown much interest in BKL at all except to hike the banner-tow fees to an unbelievable rate. This was in response to abuse by the banner-tow companies who were grossly underreporting the number of pick-ups and drop-offs (and therefore underpaying their fees).

I saw a 727 at BKL this summer. I think it was a 727-100. It was a charter, some company called "Sport World" or something like that. I think it was probably the baseball team that was playing Cleveland at the time. So BKL has to have at least medium-size capacity. (What did they do, tow it from Hopkins??)

I've based my virtual airline, AirCleveland (what an ingenious name!) at BKL. Check it out.

Up, up and away!
