RE: Delta Canceling Japan Flights At Pdx?

Thu Sep 07, 2000 11:11 am

Hello Everyone,
Now that Delta is moving their remaining flights to JFK and LAX, I have a question regarding the rescheduled flight to NGO from LAX? Since Delta is rescheduling their service to NGO from LAX, what gains will Delta receive? What I mean in gains is by wondering if Delta is considering on expanding to different markets (international and domestic markets) from LAX? I don't know what other American carriers offer service to different markets in Asia, but I do know that United is one of them. Also, I know that there are foreign carriers that offers trans-Pacific flights from LAX.

Now that Portland is off of Delta's list as an Asian hub, where shall the proposed reinstated flight to Seoul originate? Will it originate from the East Coast in Atlanta (or some other East Coast city), or originate in LAX? I guess Delta can establish a trans-Pacific hub at LAX, although I have to say that there are a lot of carriers to Asia. Only time will tell.

D.S.

I think Delta would be the only airline, not sure about JAL, to have any flight from the US to Nagoya. Plus from LAX it would make the most sense. Seoul would likely operate from ATL, LAX and in the future JFK and CVG... seems the most logical.

Nice Airport

I flew Delta via Portland two months ago. Very nice airport.

What I can say is my MD-11 in and out of Portland to and from Tokyo was almost full. So was the 763 to and from Salt lake.

I believe NW will increase its Detroit - Nagoya flights to daily starting next spring.

The Portland-Tokyo and Nagoya frequencies are being shifted as follows:

PDX-NRT becomes JFK-NRT
PDX-Nagoya becomes LAX-Nagoya

Both routes will be served with the MD11.

It makes more sense. Portland is marginal. Delta never committed to
building it into a serious hub operation and can better compete from
JFK and LAX, where it has bigger ops.

Continental won't go in to Portland. It makes no sense.

Portland's Location

Thu Sep 07, 2000 9:37 pm

Portland's location does not seem to me to be ideal for a hub. It's similar to BOS - extreme northern corner of the country. No single airline dominates BOS. Yes, PDX would have been valuable for a hub from Asia, but DL didn't build it up and it's no longer needed.
