Question About Southwest Airlines

Hi! I have a quick question about Southwest Airlines. If they are the official sponsor of the NFL, then why don't they fly to Green Bay?

Is that the only NFL city that they do not fly to?

It seems like that would be a good destination - a nice medium sized city. What is the airline service like right now in GreenBay?

NW and it's affiliates have Green Bay by the neck. SW would probably be welcomed with open arms.

that's right - I heard that NW is the official airline of the Green Bay Packers!

In fact, I remember when they went to the super bowl there was a picture in a newspaper of a NW pilot in the cockpit wearing a cheese-head !

Southwest's sponsorship of the NFL does not mean it flies to every NFL city airport, e.g. CLT, EWR, DCA, IAD, PIT, PHI, CVG.

They don't fly to BOS either. Does MHT or PVD count if you're a Patriots fan?

I was born in Green Bay and am a life-long Pack Fan!

The Green Bay market is very medium sized. Take away the Packers and you won't have much at all. Currently, Mesaba and NW seem to have a large market share. YX feeds from GRB into MKE with BE1900s and, I think, there are two RJ flights. Comair and United Express also serve GRB. USAir, I believe, tried to serve Green Bay in the mid to late 80s. Continental also tried to serve Green Bay in the early 80s with 727 service. Only non-RJ, jet flights are NW today.

Next week, the residents of Brown County will be determining the fate of the Packers by either renovating Lambeau Field or giving it the thumbs down via a referendum. Should the referendum pass, people say that great things will come.

Should the referendum fail, kiss the Pack bye bye along with a lot of the air service.

If the referendum does pass and there is growth, I think GRB would be a pretty decent market for WN. The case there would be that GRB is underserved. By April 2001, analysts say that MKE will have an established WN presence. Who knows? With WN already in Wisconsin, as some say they will be, GRB could be next. If WN can make it in MHT, they can certainly make it in GRB. GO PACK!

PVD definitely counts for the Patriots - Foxboro Stadium is halfway between Boston and Providence, though I think Logan is probably the closer airport in distance, since T.F. Green is in Warwick, SE of Providence. It's probably a quicker drive from PVD than from Logan, though, due to the usually grinding traffic on Boston's Central Artery and SE Depressway.

Southwest makes it in MHT because they get traffic from Concord, NH (15 miles), Nashua, NH (15 miles), Portsmouth, NH (25 or 30 miles), and the many Boston suburbs/satellite cities (Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill) along the NH border. Not to mention people willing to drive from southern Maine or Vermont. Southern NH has roughly one million people, and MHT can reasonably draw from another million in Massachusetts along the border for whom MHT is closer than Logan.

I'm not sure Green Bay would have the demographics for it, especially if they served MKE. Then again, Southwest does very well in smaller cities like Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, etc.

Just because WN is the official airline of the NFL doesn't mean it would have to fly to every NFL city. I'm sure they'd love to get their hands on some routes to/from MSP- NW has it in a stranglehold, and there are damn-near-monopoly prices from MSP to cities not served by rival airlines.
As has been stated, GRB's market is fairly small. It's also a seasonal market, with most traffic coming in during football season. If the Pack goes (or keeps losing  ), kiss much of that seasonal traffic goodbye, and GRB is once again recognized as the fairly limited market it is.

I remember this past Super Bowl in Atlanta, WN had a contest and the Grand prize was a trip to the Super Bowl all air, hotel paid, etc.... Well, WN doesn't fly into ATL, so they flew the winner into Birmingham, AL. and drove them to ATL. Kinda cheesy to me. But WN is still good at what they do otherwise.

I would think that WN serving MKE might just be a bit close to MDW, so WN may take that into consideration in their strategic planning and marketing. They might be in competition with themselves. The next move for WN i feel sure will be either Trenton, NJ or Allentown, PA to try and capture the PHL market. After that i am told there is a ggod chance of them going to SAV. Finally it likely will be Rochester, MN. I am told that almost happened instead of Albany. They were very very impressed with the dempgraphics of Rochester, MN. The Mayo clinic and so on. could provide passengers etc. If they went to Green Bay the service might be limited as it is in some of the smaller Texas cities and otehr smaller western cities.
