Because they suck and they have a penchant for wanting to prefer to emphasize cold weather climates.

Plus, no Latin American business traveller in their right mind would wanna risk taking a Smithsonian-quality NW DC10 aaalllllllllll the way up to MSP or DTW, just to connect and backtrack down to L.A., DC, or MCO.

Valid point there, regarding hubs' geography. Also, DL, AA, and CO already have pretty sizeable opps down south from much more strategically placed hubs.

NW own's shares in and Codeshares with CO no need to start S.America service when CO has a large presence there !!

Why would you wish NW on the poor people of S. America. Don't they have enough problems allready?

Since the replies so far have been from NWA haters I thought I might add some from the perspective of someone who happens to like NWA.

South American flying is all about market share at this point. The true yields are in Asia and do you want to take one guess at who is tops in US to Japan and SE.Asia. OK it is not AA, DAL, CO, TWA, US, or UAL. So why give up a good thing for the crowded and still unprofitable S. American flying. A long time ago NWA figured that glamorous flying was not going to mean glamorous profits.

Gee, I thought it was because Latin America is neither North, nor West.

I believe the question was about Latin America, not only South America. NW does serve Latin America. They serve MEX, MBJ, SJU, and have seasonal service to ACA, CUN, PVR, and GCM. Their is no need for them to undergo any rapid expansion throughout the rest of the region, because they can route their passengers through IAH or EWR with CO. They are better served concentrating on Asia and to a lesser extent Europe, especially Amsterdam. NW has specialized in the art of codesharing and reciprocal benefits. Their arrangement with KLM was groundbreaking, and still highly regarded as the most beneficial agreement in the industry. The pact they have with CO is also highly beneficial, especially in regards to Latin America. Why should they deploy assets better used elsewhere when there is no need?

Yet another slew of immature thick-skulls who have yet to grasp the concept of code-sharing and focus markets. I could ask the same question...

Why doesn't TWA serve Asia...it's in the world, right?

Why doesn't Continental serve Austrailia...it's a continent?

Why doesn't Delta serve Cairo...it's a delta?

"Because they suck and they have a penchant for wanting to prefer to emphasize cold weather climates."

--the peak of coherence.

On that note, last I knew, HKG,BKK,SIN--they are situated in the tropics.

Regardless, Northwest is a fine airline.

Pbb 152 made a good point about "latin"america. Regarding "South America" except for a limited amount of open skies agreements, the bulk of the routes are either old EA or PA routes. The EA's now with AA( BN before EA) and the PA now with UA. "South America" is slowly opening up with new service from CO & DL.

Back in the "good old days" (lol) Braniff flew some nice DC-8-62's ,as I recall, down to Chile,Argentina, etc.

If I'm throwing anything at you, it's going to be a cream pie. That was terrible. Funny no less.

This is the business strategy that Northwest has chosen. Not all airlines serve all parts of the world. It all depends on their strategy.
