Airbus freighters?

Sun Nov 15, 1998 3:28 pm

Pardon my flooding of the forum with air freight news; I've noticed that unlike Boeing, Airbus doesn't really put any emphasis on the important frieghter market. UPS just ordered a few dozen new A300s, but that is the first time I have heard of Airbus producing freighters. Have any other airlines placed orders for purpose-built freighters form Airbus??

I don't think so and I think Airbus should
wake up and notice that this is a big market!
That company in GSO makes $$$ on converstions!
Boeing should keep the MD11 in production! It's
a good cargo plane. ie FedEx,Luftanasa cargo ect..

There is of course the Beluga (based on the A-300) which Airbus is currently marketing. No orders yet though but Boeing would have nothing that could really compete with it as far as hold volume is concerned.

I guess that the MD-17 may be able to compete, but I currently don't have the specs of both types handy.

FedEx has many A310s and A300 freighters, but I don't know if they came directly from Airbus.

The FedEx A300-600 were ordered new directly from Airbus. They ordered around 35 with half of them already delivered. As far as I know, the UPS
A300 will offer one pallet position more on main deck than those of FedEX.
Airbus also delivered around 8 A300B4 as freighters or convertible freighters late 70`s and early 80`s. Customers were Hapag Lloyd and SAA.

Airbus does enphasize a lot on freighters because they them selves have an in house freigter conversion. As for the A300 F you can buy them right fresh of the assembly line, like ups and Fed Ex have done recently. Dhl has also 2 orders for mew ones.
