Which New York Airport Is The Best To Fly Into?

Fri Sep 08, 2000 6:58 am

I was thinking of going to New York and I was wondering which is the easiest airport to go through. Which is the closest to Manhattan and which is the nicest? Thank you.

It would be JFK because there ar way too many delays at EWR and the facilities are to antiquedted. JFK's terminal are being remodeled as I type this post and I have yet to encounter a seriuos problem at JFK. JFK also is a great place to spot many of the foreign airlines that come into this famous meeting spot where America greets the world for over 50 years. And the tradition still lives on at JFK.

Avoid JFK. Especially with the damn construction work going on.

LGA is the closest to Manhattan geographically, but traffic can be hell if the Mets are in town. Try the water shuttle from the Marine Air terminal for a nice change!

EWR is my personal favorite. It is easy to get into town if you don't mind riding NJ Transit (302 Skylink bus to Newark Penn and then train into NY Penn Station).

La Guardia. Traffic isn't THAT bad and I've actually NEVER experienced any delays! My travels trhough La Guardia have always been pleasant. But as a sentimental choice, I'd choose JFK. EWR is far from midtown and you have to pay tolls (which I totally refuse to do), whereas with JFK and LGA you can bypass those going by the Queensboro.

I don't live in NY, but i travel there a lot and these are my suggestions. LGA is the closest but JFK is the most interesting. For LGA it can be better to take the Triborough (if you're heading to the Upper East or West Sides), but there are tolls if that bothers you. Its has many international airlines and lots of things to see, the new T1, Saarinen's TW terminal. It's great for interesting planes. However it can take a while from Manhattan and it is ALWAYS under construction it seems like. Soon Tw terminal will be under renovation and they are building that new train, always things happening there. Not a ton to say about EWR...

If your final destination is Wall St or East side,
and you are arriving from BOS or DC, take the
DL shuttle into Marine Air Terminal, and water
shuttle to the above location.

We've rarely had trouble with either of the other
two international airports (JFK,EWR).

LaGuardia would be my choice, only cos of it's location to the New York city centre. Also where are you coming from? If you are coming from anywhere from Boston to Washington DC, take the train. The train is cheaper and much slower, but if you hit bad traffic the train can take you to Manhattan city centre in occasionally less time, and a lot less stress.

LaGuardia Baby!!!!

I relax all my passengers coming through my bar with drinks so that they fully enjoy their 50 min queue for takeoff, as they realize they'll probably be number 24 for takeoff.

I love my LGA passengers. And they love me because of my warm and witty attitude.

Kennedy is big, tangled, and disorganized, yet interesting. Newark just plain sucks. Why? Because it's in the state of Jersey and has too many ugly Continental planes there.

Both Are Great

Hello,

I have been to both airports, and honnestly I liked both.

From an aviation buff point of view, there might however be a bit better to go to JFK because of the larger international traffic. However, EWR is nowhere disapointting about that either.

Best regards,

I haven't been to the US, but many of my friends (non US citizens) have been repeatedly frustrated by the long delays at immigration at JFK.

They have found flying into EWR, and getting out of the airport (from UK flights) a lot quicker.

That's from a "I need to get to bed-fast" point of view.

Dont fly into LGA!! Search the archives for ContinentalEWR's recent post, "La Guardia Airport Crunch", that will give you some reason not to fly into there. Fly into JFK, or even better EWR. Dont listen to 757 about it being in NJ and everything, NJ is a great state and EWR is a great airport.

For domestic services, its La Guardia all the way. 10 minutes and you're downtown !!
For international services, I prefer flying into EWR.
Flew into EWR twice - BA on a 777, and Korean on a 744, and customs and immigration took all of 10 minutes. It is also a faster ride into Manhattan (if the Lincoln tunnel isn't backed up to Alaska), but even with backups, its a faster ride than JFK which is 30 miles out on the Van Wyk highway to hell.
As far as spotting goes, JFK is probably a tad better, but EWR now sees lots of foreign heavies - SIA, KE, Turkish, all the europeans, Malaysian, etc.

Clearing customs in Newark is much easier in my experience. As far as getting to Manhattan, they all average out to about the same hassle. However, I am very excited for Newark's upcoming train station, which will really put it ahead of the others in accessibility, making it only 20 minutes from Penn Station in Manhattan.

Jaysit: Your two experiences of EWR wrt customs
and immigration taking 10 min can only be possible, if you were in FC. Having done EWR internationally many times, I can say only a few times on a 1/3 full flight from carribean trip did we see that kind of a speed

Cyrus: Why is customs an issue ? Do you have many checked baggages ? I have only once had a customs check coming back from SDQ - They were checking
nearly everyone on that flight

If there are two three international flights bunched up together, and your plane was last in the bunch, no matter what you are SOL. In those cases JFK handles that pressure better than EWR.
