Airline Advertising

Tue Sep 12, 2000 5:25 am

I remember along time ago hearing the United "song" on TV and the radio. Do they still use that (Rapshody in Blue) in their marketing?? I have seen "747 Braniff Place" and their crazy dressed F/A's. What other wacky adverts have you ran across?? What did some former airlines advertise?? Did Pan Am have a song?? Eastern, National, Republic?? How did they advertise?

Southwest definitely has a strong marketing program. Billboards in the cities they serve include:

"Austin Auften"
"More Dallas Touchdowns"
"More Liftoffs to Houston"
"Phoenix Phast"
"LAX A.S.A.P."

Check out there website and you can view some of their advertisements from the early seventies to the present. I highly recommend it.

Some airlines advertised on airplane parts such as air brakes. A pax would be sitting next to the wing and close to landing she'd see "Fly Eastern" or something like this on an air brake.

Of course this especially worked well after the aircraft was sold without telling the new owner about it. The message would be hidden except when the brakes were used.

Speaking of advertising.....

Don't you feel morbid with your user name?

For those who don't know, N312RC is the MD-80 that crashed in KDTW.

I'm sure there's a fantastic story behind your choice of this screen name. Care to fill us in?

SAS had one where this lady met her boyfriends parents, and she broke all their antiques, and it asked
"are there ever moments you would'nt like to be some place?"

Cheers

I saw this strange Southwest ad, in which there is hip-hop music, and there are Southwest crew members dancing around the plane!!

About my screen name....

It was the first plane I flew on when I was really little, down to Florida from DTW. I remember this due to my parents taking pictures of me at the gate and the plane in the background. It was the plane that crashed at DTW in 1987. My mom is a registered nurse here in michigan. She showed the emergency services her proof (she was on her way home from work), and they let her walk the crash site. She saw things that were, well, you know. So I couldnt think of a username, and thought why not use this one.

Back in the early 70's, Continental had a good TV/radio ad. The TV ad had shots of Continental tails taxiing, taking off and landing. The accompanying song went:

We're here to make you happy
We're out to make you pleased
You're flying Continental
Your flight will be a breeze
We'll help to make you happy
We'll skip to prove it's true
On Continental Airlines
We move our tails for you

CHORUS:

We really move our tails for you
We make your every wish come true
Fly Continental Airlines
We really move our tails for you.

Unfortunaely, the ad compaign caused an uproar with the women's lib movement. They thought it was sexist and said some people would associate the "moving tails" part of the song with the flight attendnt's rear-ends not the aircraft.

Too bad, cause it was a clever ad, and besides, National got to keep on using their "Hi, I'm (girl's name). FLY ME!

Pan Am definately did have a song in the 70's, their advertisements/commercials used to say "We're America's Airline to the World... Pan Am".. This was sung, then sometimes they added "California's Airline to the World..." instead of "America's..."

I also remember one where they flashed some of their destinations on tv, and said something like where next Pan Am would be taking you, then they showed the moon....
