Qantas To Buy Into MAS

Thu Sep 14, 2000 12:44 pm

A couple of news articles are popping up saying that Malaysian and Qantas are in discussions about the later taking up an "equity" in the Malaysian Airline. Which I think is interesting for a number of factors. Will Qantas now stop over in KL rather than Bangkok and Singapore on the way to Europe, at this stage Qantas has very limited services in to KL. Obviously MAS' comprehensive European and Middle Eastern coverage will certainly benefit Qantas.

Will this mean a full fledged alliance where each carrier will modify their schedules to offer seamless travel, much like KLM and NW do, or is there only going to be an alliance on routes between Australia and Malaysia?

Will this lead to Malaysian joining the oneworld alliance?

Coming on the heels of KL and BA in similar discussions, is it mere coincidence considering KL and MAS are already part of the wings alliance. Are all of KL's partners going to go over to Oneworld, such as Emirates, Kenya airways e.t.c.

What do you guys and girls think?

If Qantas really going to transfer their SEA hub to KLIA in order to co-ordinate with MAS, it will be really interesting to see whether BA will do the same thing as well. Beside that, If that happended, Changi will be really piss off. It seems like the relationship between Malaysia and Singapore will be pissing each other off forever.

Well...

If QF/BA do shift their focus towards KUL, the following issues will be on hand...

1) I guess that QF/BA do do S'pore a lot of good by bringing in tourists from both the UK/OZ and S'pore as a destination will have greater competitive pressure.

2) MH presents Australians with easier connections to Continental Europe for QF/BA aligned pax. Now they hve to go via LHR.

but...

1) If QF/BA are distracted, it will lessen SQ's competition in the S'porean market.

2) MH, in S'pore, competes purely on "bargain-basement" fares. The majority of S'poreans would PROBABLY rather fly SQ if not for their sky-high pricing.
Would QF/BA curtail that? Do they want a reputation as an el cheapo airline as well?

3) The formidable VS/SQ/NZ and AN combination would become less hindered... in the S'pore market, anyway.

The bottom line is though, people will not stop travelling to S'pore and QF/BA will not "shift" its operations to KUL, but instead increase activity in KUL.

Plus, the whole KL/MH/NW trick does come into play quite neatly with OneWorld. Me thinks "Wings" will be absorbed into OneWorld and Qualiflyer will become bigger and more competitve with an alliance with AA.

Wasn't MAS rumoured to be thinking about joining ONEworld? Stronger ties with Qantas can only help this, surely?

cheers, Phil
