EK Long Haul

Fri Sep 15, 2000 5:27 am

I was wondering, since the Boeing 777 is Emirates' principal long-haul aircraft, why didn't they opt for the 777LR instead of the A340-500 for their ultralong routes they will start shortly?

I read a recent article stating the fact that Saudi Arabian wanted to buy Boeing planes to please the US government (was it Airways)?

There's a probably a more mundane reason, but does anyone here think Emirates are being careful not to favour Europe over US or vice versa when ordering a/c?

Bahrain have very close ties (politically) to the US, whilst I don't think the same can be said for the UAE; but does anyone think politics is playing a small role with the Emirates fleet?

Boeing didn't launch the 777LR at the time EK was looking for ultra long haul equip (1998). Airbus launched the A345 and it met EK's requirements and given their desperation to launch non-stop services to the US and Australia, it was the acft that would be delivered earliest.

Emirates is set to commence non-stop ops to North America. Initial flights will be with A345 into JFK and then proceed to other dests.

I don't think there is much politics going on inside Emirates with regards to aircraft selection. At least nowhere near the level of Saudi Arabian.

Emirates have tended to select aircraft on performance, economy and compatibility. If EK are happy with a particular type they will tend to order more, regardless of political ramification.

It turns out, that EK's fleet comprises a strong mix of both Boeing and Airbus although slightly biased toward the latter.

Thanks EK777,

BTW, did you get that note I sent you about the Emirates cadets at West Michigan University?? I thought they only recruited Direct-Entry Pilots (DEP) !!

One presumes UAE citizenship would be needed to apply as an Emirates cadet?
