Which Airline Did Your Olympic Team Use?

Sun Sep 17, 2000 3:59 am

I noticed whilst I was in Madrid last week, that the Spanish Olympic team were using SQ on MAD-SIN-SYD.
I think the British team would have used BA.

The actual US Airline of the 2000 Summer Games is United. Delta has it for the 2002 Winter Games. The US Teams were flown to Sydney on UA

Except that Canadian Flew the team down to Sydney, but after all it's all one airline now, more or less....

I'm assuming Greece sent its teams with Olympic Airways   !

Even though OA's 747 are pretty much retired, it would have been quite appropriate if SX-OAC "Olympic Spirit" or SX-OAD "Olympic Flame" was used as in the last Olympic games. Quite fitting with the Olympic rings on the tail as part of OA's livery.

747's owned by OA:

SX-OAA "Olympic Zeus" sold
SX-OAB "Olympic Eagle" spare
SX-OAC "Olympic Spirit" spare
SX-OAD "Olympic Flame" in use
SX-OAE "Oympic Peace" spare

As far as I know, the British (sorry, GB & NI) team flew exclusively with BA. There was a story in one of the national papers having a go at BA for making all the athletes fly in coach!

cheers, Phil.

Some of the Australian athletes would have flown to Sydney, because it's a long walk from Perth!

The Singapore athletes flew SIA, codeshare with the official Olympics Airline for Sydney2000 - Ansett.
I wouldn't be surprised if their tickets showed AN instead of SQ.

I remember I was in Greece during the '96 Summer Olympics, and when the Greek National Team came back they came on Olympic Flame from JFK.

How did the Yugoslav team get to Sydney since JAT doesn't fly to Australia? Did they trave just like anyone else going to Australia from Belgarde, via connecting flights?

The german team flew on LH to SIN and SIN-SYD on SQ.
I think they use Ansett for domestic flights.

Firstly, seeing as Ansett is the official airline of the 2000 Olympics I would say that those athletes in Aussie who had to get to Sydney would have flown Ansett. Some athletes also have sponsorship deals with QF, so I would say that they would have gone with QF.

To answer someones question on OA. OA bought in an Airbus A-340 into Perth (which is great coz they don't fly here otherwise), with the Greek team on board (it is due back here in a couple of weeks as well to take them back to Greece. Other than the Greek team, I doubt any other *major* teams would have used OA.

Cubana bought in a chartered Il-62 flight into Sydney but whether it carried the Cuban team or not, I don't know.

Aeroflot bought in the Russian squad on an Il-96-300 and Malev bought in a 767 for the Hungarian team. South African Airways bought in the South African team.

There are more, but I just can't remember them just now.

Cheers

All Australian athletes used AN including those sponsored by QF. For example, the entire swim team flew MEL-SYD last week on a scheduled AN 767 service. This included the likes of Perkins, Hackett and O'Neill who are all sponsored by QF. When they arrived in SYD they were taken directly to buses on the tarmac so they didn't have to fight off thousands of autograph hunters in the terminal.

Several teams are flying British Airways. Due to passneger privacy i cant give out who it was but we had team members from places far and wide like Nigeria, Greece, many of the Caribbean nations - and of course the British team as BA is the Official Carrier of the British Olympic Team.

The entire 744 of BA16 SYDLHR 02OCT is blocked off for the British Olympic Team.

We have been dealing quite a bit with the Ansett guys out there at the Olympic site and trust me I am very glad we (or QF) were not the Official Carrier. They have been working like dogs out there. They reckon there is a permanent line of about 30 athletes per consultant all day every day.........so spare a thought for our friends and colleagues at Ansett at the moment!

Cheers
