I'm Riding On A Delta L-1011!

Mon Sep 18, 2000 1:39 am

My parents told me that they would get me tickets on board a Delta L-1011 for Christmas!! Isn't that great??

I just thought I'd share this with you guys, I'm sooooooooo excited!!

I will bring back lots of pics of the cockpit and interior, one thing I noticed about is that there arn't many L-1011 pics of the plane sitting at the gate, well, that will change soon!!

Best Regards,

PS: How is the L-1011?

The L-1011 rides like a Cadillac....very smooth, and largely unaffected by minor turbulence. The takeoff roll is usually long, but it takes off like an elevator. If you are seated in the tail section of the L-1011-250, whe you look outside on takeoff, you'll appreciate the power of the aircraft based on the angle of climb. The noise in that section is almost mindnumbing on long flights. Try to get a window seat for your flight. If you get a cool flight attendant, they might let you into the lower galley after the flight has ended. It's a dynamite airplane that's about ready for retirement after many years of service.

Cool. I'll be riding on two L-1011s around Christmas too. My flights are SFO-ATL and ATL-SFO.

Another reason to sit in the very back section is because there is one (or two if the flight is really full) flight attendent(s) specifically for that section, so you get servered much faster than the rest of the plane. We in the back section finished our meals before the people in the middle of the front section even got served!

One last thing, I think that the pitch on the L1011 is 1-3" longer than on other craft. I swithced from an L1011 to an MD-88 and felt crammed on the MD-88.

Have fun, its a great aircraft.

If you can, get a window seat in one of the last rows. You can watch that huge stabilizer move when you rotate and get that great Hummm from #2 engine.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Hello there,
Here's a word of advice: enjoy the flight on the
L-1011 to the fullest because they're not going to be around much longer with Delta. I have to say after flying on one of those babies from ATL to LAX during this past June, I have to say that it's one of the most smoothest airplane rides I've ever been on. It's too bad Delta is retiring them, but they are excellent airplanes to fly on.

What are your flights in December? Starting Nov 1st at least one of the SFO-ATL flights is being operated by a B767-400 instead of the L1011

I've been checking on that a lot. I was kinda hoping to be on one of the first 764 flights since I have been on soooooo many L1011s, but it doesn't look like that will happen. I checked and found out that the 3 flight to ATL is a 764, not the 830 that I am on.

Mon Sep 18, 2000 12:32 pm long as the parents are footing the bill you may as just well take a L1011 LAX to HNL or ATL to HNL. When you get the spend a few days getting a tan and then enjoy the nice overnight flight home.

I will miss the L1011, I have been on a ton of Eastern's old birds and also on Delta's. My last couple of trips with Delta's fleet however were a bit disapointing. First off don't sit in the middle. I got the very last row in the middle for a flight to FLL from ATL. Talk about heavy fumes during start up! But that was nice compared to my return flight which was over the wing area in the middle once again. That area is 5 seats abreast and is very cramped. Remember the days when it was 4 abreast and they had those deviders to break up the 4 seats? That was much nicer. The window seat is another story however. I love the L1011 if I can get a window (actually I love any plane I can get a window)

Even though I hate to see them go, I think its about time. My last flight on one, the over head bins were shaking so badly on take off and landing they half of them poped open. The seats are in poor condition as they should be by now and the video screens are so blurry its almost pointless to have them anymore.

But the L1011 sure can fly, like many have said it is so smooth once airborn, especially near the front. It was indeed a very modern plane for its time. I still get a kick out of how many times you hear that flight attendent bell ring. I dont think people still know how to use that control panel on the arm rest. The best is people standing up looking for the button for the reading lights. Oh well, I guess the L1011 is still state of the art for some travelers.
