Another Darned J41

Wed Mar 10, 1999 12:56 pm

Well, United has gone and done it to me again. On Christmas Day they switched me from a 737 to a J41, and it was the worst airplane I have ever flown on. I swore I would never fly on another one. Well, this April 3, I was scheduled to fly RIC-ORD-NRT-SIN on a 737 and two 747s. A couple of weeks ago they changed my 737 to a 727, which made me very happy. But today they notified me that the flight from RIC to ORD will no longer operate on Saturdays, so they rerouted me RIC-JFK-NRT-SIN. Guess what! The RIC-JFK flight is on a Jetstream 41! I think I'll give up flying United and go back to Northwest or Delta. They never treated me like that. On the plus side, I now get to fly nonstop JFK to NRT, a 14 hour flight on a 747-400.

Isn't it always the way Bob, when you make these plans it's always the last thing you wanted to happen, that happens.
Anyway I'am sure you will still have a great time on what sounds like a great flight (JFK to NRT).

See you later Bob.

Julia.

Sorry to hear that, i've never been on a J41, but i've been on plenty of Embraer EMB120s, i work for Skywest/UA express out in LA, have no fear of the J41 if you ever come out this way because you won't get one with Skywest as the exclusive UA express out here

What is wrong with the J41? Is it much worse than similar aircraft, like Saabs or EMB-120´s?

Cheer up Bob: I know All Nippon flies from IAD to NRT and they and UA and code sharing partners. Maybe you can switch you flight to go IAD-NRT-SIN on NH all the way instead of UA. I have flown NH once and their service is very good. Just a suggestion.

In answer to your question about what is wrong with the J41, for one thing the seats are so narrow that they can't have armrests. If they did, no one could fit into them. Another thing is that they have no overhead bins or underseat space, so you have to leave your carry-on bag outside and they put it somewhere. I don't like my valuables out of my sight, and I can't fit them all in my pockets, such as money, tickets, passport, hotel vouchers, etc. Also, it feels like a toy airplane. Why can't they make commuter cabins as roomy as the small piston aircraft that used to fly those routes, such as the Convair 440 and Martin 4-0-4?

Sorry to hear about the equipment/routing change. However, I don't think it warrants giving up United altogether. This sort of change can happen to anyone, on any airline.

Regarding cabin space on commuter aircraft--don't single out the J41 as uniquely uncomfortable. At least you're not on a SWM. Those Fairchild metros, while fast, are much more cramped than the J41 is. I don't think any remaining US airlines fly them, thank goodness.

If the new routing is completely unsatisfactory to you, why not call United and ask to be rerouted?

I fly the J41 a lot

Alot of my good friends live in Albany, and I fly UAX there a lot. I don't find the J41 any worse that the EMB propellers! They all make lots of noise and vibration, and are so cramped. But be glad its not a J32!!! Also, I haveh heard rumors that UAX/ACA is planning to expands the RJ fleet. I think the best RJ is with Air Wisconson, the BAe-146. The DEN-ASE is the best!

I did ask United for a new routing. They could route me through ORD with later flights from RIC-ORD and ORD-NRT, but there are no window seats available. I can't see myself sitting on a plane for over 13 hours without a window. I had window seats on my original flights because I booked 9 months ahead to make sure. I was able to secure window seats on my new RIC-JFK and JFK-NRT flights. So I guess I'll just stick with the J41. I'd rather fly on that for 75 minutes than do without a window for 13 hours.
