Why The A318/A319?

Mon Sep 18, 2000 2:54 pm

Hello,

Why did airbus make the A318, and the A319. Couldn't they make the A319, the A320-300? Or somthing like that? I mean they are the same plane except for the size...well almost.

Ok, I can understand the A321, because of the extra doors.

Any one have any thoughts on that?

That's interesting to mention that...I was wondering why the A340-300 wasn't called the A341 or something like that.

Well why eas the 720 called that? why not the 707-520 or something?

Its just a model number, which sounds sexy(in th opinion of the mktg team) and 'marketable'.

BTW, do you know which was the original Boeing 717 in the 60's?

Look at the size and look a the numbers - A318 and A319 are both smaller than the original design, the A320. A321 is longer. You immediately recognize the logic without even thinking about it, which presume would not be the case if the A319 is callled A320-300.

The numbers do make sence, with a smaller number for a smaller plane. A320 made a bit smaller = A319, made a bit smaller still =A318. Take the original A320 and make it larger =A321, it's simple. Does this mean if a further shrink were made it would be the A317, and a longer stretch would be A322?
Another point was also raised about the A340. Why is ther an A340-300, and upcoming 500 and 600 rather than A341, A342 A343?

The 720 was called the 720 due to a request by United Airlines, as they refused to buy an aircraft called a 707.

The original 717 was the KC-135 tanker for the Air Force.
