They also charter for the Phoenix Suns...America West lost the contract, because Jerry Colangelo wanted use of an A320, but Bill Franke (AWA CEO) would only let them use the B737-100 (N708AW). So, they went with Northwest instead and the are using a B727-200.

Several years ago I read an article(don't remember where) about sports charters. NW was one of the leading airlines involved. At that time mostly 727-200's. They also had some sort of a program worked out at MSP maint. where the aircraft could be re-configured rather quickly for charter or line use. Seems that at that time they had 4 or 5 727s assigned to sports charters for NHL, NFL, and NBA. Hope that helps!

Most of the aircraft NW uses for Team Charters are from CHAMPION AIR, which Northwest bought. so even though NWA makes the contract, Champion Air aircraft are used.

The wings and tigers HAD a BAC-111, I still think they do. I remember hearing that it got into an accident with a Gas truck on the ramp. It had structural damage.

Currently the sports team charters are flown by NWA mainline i.e. NWA planes, pilots, fa, etc. The only outsourcing is done for the catering onboard. The food contract was awarded seperately to an outside vendor by the individual sports teams ( you should see the size of the portions !).

Champion does fly charters on an ad hoc basis however no contracts yet with any teams that I am aware of...yet.

hello folks -
what about miami air? their 727's used to fly into mke every once in a while for sports charters. i would've thought that they would've been taking care of the brewers because the brewers usually went out from the signature flight support fbo to avoid the autograph-seekers in the terminal.

The Brewers typically fly Midwest Express for their charters, not Northwest.

I haven't found a list yet, but I know from previous articles in newspapers and news stories that NW charters for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Cleveland Browns, the Oakland Raiders, and the San Antonio Spurs.

While I don't have a complete list of The teams NWA charters, I can tell you that they have flown....
The Detroit Lions (NFL)
The Green Bay Packers (NFL)
The New England Patriots (NFL)
The Tennessee Titans (NFL)
The Philadelphia Eagles (NFL)
The Cleveland Browns (NFL)
The Sacramento Kings (NBA)
The Tampa Bay Bucs (NFL)
The Mighty Ducks (NHL)
The Minnesota Vikings (NFL)
The Minnesota Wild (NHL)
The Oakland Raiders
And many more.

As far as fleet usage goes, NW does have a dedicated fleet of 727-200's that they have converted for charter use, and these can, in fact, be switched out for revenue use fairly quickly (as mentioned in a previous post).
NW also uses it's other aircraft for NBA, NFL, NHL charters as well. I know that the Raiders use a DC-10 all the time.

Hope this answered your question

Are the charters profitable or done strictly for the prestige?

I was under the impression that YX chartered for the
Bucks (NBA), Brewers (MLB) and the Packers (NFL), not NW.

The Browns had a NW 757-200 last night for OAK-CLE. Got in about 1:30 am.

Flybulldog asked:
"Are the charters profitable or done strictly for the prestige?"

PROFIT, PROFIT, PROFIT.

The type of people that charter commercial aircraft do not want alot of public attention. I have never seen NWA go out of their way to gloat about who they are flying around. A good example of that is when they handled "The Rolling Stones". Hardly anyone knew NWA was the charter until the tour was complete.
