If You Could Modify ANY Fleet...

Sat Sep 23, 2000 6:14 am

If you could Modify ANY Airlines' Fleet, which airline Would It Be, and Why?

I would Change USAirways fleet, I would Pull out the 732's (Metrojet) , and replace them with 737-600's.
I would Also change the 727's to 757's, and the DC-9's to MD-90's. I Would also change the 767-200's to 763's and mostly 764's. I would Keep the A330...

I would pull out United's A319's and A320's and replace them with 737-700's and 737-600's.

Wouldn´t that be a little bit too small? Must be 800 for the 320, 700 for the 319.

I would change Air Canada, Dump the A319,320,330,and 340 and replace them with the 737-800, 737-700, 777-200er and 777-300er

Yeah I agree and while you're working on the lower end, I'll pull the 767s and replace them with A330-200s and -300s.

Anyway, Alitalia. Out go the MD11s, 767s and MD80s and let's have 777s and A320s and more 321s.

Iberia needs to decide between its two big narrowbodies, so bye-bye 757.

Aer Lingus needs to lose those 146s (who doesn't).

Thai should decide between the A330-300 and the 777-200; yes, I know, quite a few airlines do use them, but they're fairly close together in capacity. One idea would be, if possible, to convert them to long haul aircraft and pull the MD11s. The airline needs to standardise on 744s (out go the 743s), 773s/777ERs, A330s and 737, possibly the 737NG also coming in.

Well, that's it for the moment.

I would change Northwest...
Instead of Saab 340.......Dornier 328Jet
CRJ-200 Stays
AvroRJ70
AvroRJ85 Instead of DC-9-10(Already happening, I believe...)
AvroRJ100 Instead of DC-9-30
A319 Stays
A320 Stays
A321 instead of 757 smaller routes
767-351 instead of 757 larger routes
767-451 instead of DC-10-40
777-251instead of DC-10-30
777-351 instead of 747-251 and 747-151
747-451 stays

(the 51 is Boeing's code for Northwest. For example, 747-451, 747-251, 747-151, etc...)

I'd modify all the IL86s in service throughout the former Soviet Union. I'd fit them with 45,000 lb thrust high-bypass turbofans, completely new Western cabins, comfortable and ergonomic seats in First, Business and coach classes, and central overhead storage bins. I'd also give them full in-flight entertainment systems. Once the mods were in place, the IL86M (M in the Russian aircraft industry stands for MODIFIED) would put DC-10s and even L1011s to shame!

AA!

Out with the MD-11s, DC10s, A300, old 767s.

New widebodies:

More b777s.
B767-400ER
A340 for pacific routes
B747-400 for Asia

New narrow bodies:

B737NG
A320
B757

Don't make fun of me or call me stupid but that is the fleet that I would modify.

Acually, the 736 is bigger than A319. THe 737-800 would be good match to A320.

Oh no, please don´t make this a new A-B war  . You´re not asked to pick any North American Airbus operator and say "dump A, buy B" (like Slawko and Boeing747-400 did  ) but rather state the reasons for your choice, concerning route structure, fleet, fleets of alliance partners and so on (like Kaitak did  ).
Jeez, I don´t go and say, "ah, well, Condor´s all Boeing fleet (752, 753, 763) annoys me, buy some Airbusses, no matter what".
There´s no black and white, and I expect every Boeing enthusiast to objectively evaluate other manufacturers´ models´ qualities. I, as Airbus enthusiast   do so, and I concede that the 757/767 family   is better than the 300/310  .

My post would not start a war. I want United just to have an all-Boeing fleet, because they are the biggest airline and they are American. I just think that the 737's would suit them better.

I would replace Britannia's 18 strong fleet of 757-200's with the 737-800. 767-200's out, replaced with the 767-400. That leaves the 767-300's, which I would replace with the 777-200 or the A330-200, however the Airbus would mean major retraining for pilots. This would line up Britannia for an alliance with their new sister company Hapag Lloyd, and better utilization of the fleet between the two airlines

Replacing a 762 with a 764 makes no sense (180 pax vs. 240). Replacing the 763 with the 777 makes no sense (220 pax vs. 320 pax).

A320/737NG Comparisions:
-------------------------

A318 - 737-600
A319 - 737-700
A320 - 737-800
A321 - 737-900

I disagree, my theory is based on these principals,
1. A charter 767-200 carries 274 pax and a 767-300 carries 316 pax.

2. the UK CAA has implimented a study into seat pitch, which will, im sure mean charter airlines removing seats.

3.Tour operator will still be commited to selling the same amount of holidays, so the charter airlines will need to increase the size of their aircraft to meet this demand.

Britannia will sell 2 767-200's this year to Air Atlanta, due to ageing.

How about this? What fleet would you NOT modify? You think the respected airline has the most efficient fleet to serve thier structure.

I agree with B744!

The Airbusses are the oddballs in UAL's fleet. I think that the 737 would suite them much better for a number of reasons.
1. Crews
2. Maintence
3. The -700 can be compared to the -300, so you can use them on similar routes.

It just makes sence

I would pull the A300s from AA's fleet. Those things are old, and trashed. AA is still the best though!

The 736 is NOT bigger than the 319. rather its the opposite.

Comparison based on 2-class seting capacity:

737-600 - Airbus A318 - ~110 seats
737-700 - Airbus A319 - ~126 seats
737-800 - Airbus A320 - ~150 seats
737-900 - Airbus A321 - ~185 seats

Well ILUV767, I also agree that the Airbusses are oddballs in the UAL fleet; HOWEVER, because of the number of them in it (I believe that UAL has the largest A320 fleet), it just isn't one anymore IMO.

OK OK!!!

Anyways, back on topic...

I would add a few planes to Finnair's fleet (completely dreaming mind you) :

Long-haul:
3 A340-500 (for services such as HEL-SYD nonstop)
3 A340-600 (add destinations such as SFO (re-add), HKG, SHA)
MD-11: would be kept.

Medium-haul:
18 A319/320/321 (using all remaining options)
8 A318 (use as shuttle between HEL-ARN)

Short-haul:
5 CRJ200 (Take over HEL-SVL/LPP/VRK/KUO from Golden Air)
10 CRJ700/900 (For Finnair's entry into Swedish domestic market)

Moi,
Kai

I would take out the AA A300's and replace them with 767 300's. I am not biased against Airbus or anything, but the A300 is the oddball of the AA fleet. They operate 100+757's, and 75+767's while only 35 A300's.

However, I would not eliminate the 757 from NW's fleet and replace it with the A321. I think the 757 is in general a better aircraft then the 321. Also, when NW operates its seasonal ski routes, like to EGE, it needs the power of the 757's engines to allow it to have a full plane flying between ski resorts and NW hubs.

I think Alaska Airlines should get some 757's rather than the 737-900. But i still think the -900 will be a cool plane.

Dear AA777,

HOw would I modify airline fleets? Let me count the ways:

First off, all British Aerospace Jetstreams would be grounded, chopped up, and made into pots and pans. That plane cannot seat three across, vibrates badly, and has terrible visibility. Sorry, Atlantic Coast, but that's the way it goes. Atlantic Coast would then put CRJ-50s and Dornier 328Jets on those routes.

Because US Airways went with Airbus narrowbodies, they should gradually eliminate all 125-seat (A319 size) and 150-seat (A320 size) 737s and MD-80s, and buy A318s or Boeing 717s to replace the 732,'s DC-9-30s, and F-100s. A318s would probably be most practicable, since they could use engines similar to the 319 and 320s.

Northwest needs to do something with their DC-9 fleet-it's not a bad plane, but very old and inefficient. Probably a319s and A318s, and more ARJ's to replace the DC-9-10s.

O.K. then - If I we CEO of Northwest, here's how the fleet would look in about 7 years (no A vs. B war here):

B717-200s - 160
A319s - 120
A320s - 115
B757-200s - 85
B777-200ER - 22
B777-300ER - 18
B747-400 - 45

Total Fleet 565

Singapore Airlines.

I would pull out the A340-313E,A310-324,A340-513X and the A3XX from the SIA fleet and the new fleet would be:

B747-412 39
B767-412ERx 19
B777-212ER 52
B777-312 11
B747X 32

B737NG for UA?
Unfortunately, United is highly satisfied with the busses, as head Goodwin just stated...so dreams remain dreams...
B737-600 bigger than A319? That shows how 'informed' the Boeing lobby is about the competitior's products...haha
