How Many Douglas Super-DC-3 Were Made?

Sat Sep 23, 2000 8:24 pm

One generally only ever hears about the DC-3 and that approximately 10 000 were built. However, the Super-DC-3 succeeded the ordinary DC-3 with new wings and empennage, redesigned landing gear, lengthened fuselage and more powerful engines. How many of this model were built and in what year did production cease?

The Super DC-3 was an unabashed failure, with exactly 3 built for the civilian market. The U.S. Navy kept the line going (in a way) by upgrading ~100 of it's R4Ds (DC-3s) to R4D-8 Super DC-3 standard.
The Super DC-3 went out of new build production as quickly as it came in, but the exact year escapes me.

Thanks Ben, for that info. I guess it might have been 1950 then. Perhaps a DC-3 fanatic on the forum can confirm this?

Just to clarify Ben's answer, the Super DC4 prototypw was built in 1948/9 and was rolled out in the spring of 1949.

Donald Douglas took it on tour and the airlines raved about it, but only Capital bought it with an order for 3.

The reason? New Super 3s were retailing at $200,000 but you could buy a standard DC3/C47 for $8,000 and they were plentiful.

The prototype went into US Navy service as a YC129, after which 100 R4Ds were upgraded to R4D-8 standard.

So FOUR civilian Super DC3s were built, three saw airline service and one passed to the USN
