Continental Houston-South America

Sun Sep 24, 2000 10:39 pm

I've heard rumors in the past about CO wanting to expand services to destinations in Peru, Ecuador, and Venezuela, such as Cuzco, Maracaibo, and others. Does anyone know what's on their list or what they want to serve? Any other information as well?

Not sure where else in Ecuador they would fly to - they already serve Guayaquil and Quito - the two principal cities. Not sure if any other airport has international facilities (ie immigration, customs etc)

Any new routes would of course have to get approval from the DoT and there are some other airlines who would almost definitely also be interested. DL (especially) and AA (possibly). As CO found out with the BOG decision, new entrants and airports usually get a better deal.

Interesting question, and good points, NickofAtlanta. I knew DL would get the route since CO is already established in Colombia and DL is a new carrier there providing service to a new market.

I've wondered the same thing myself about IAH South America. I suspect CO will bring Santiago Chile back. I think IAH-Cartagena or Cali would be good. Since DL is a newcomer to these South American markets, I doubt that DL would be quite ready to start service to say Cuzco or Cali or Cartegena from the states when they're just getting ready to start BOG service. I strongly suspect DL would prefer adding JFK-South America flights rather than competing against AA or CO for a route to Maracaibo, Cuzco, or Cali from ATL. That wouldn't make any sense.

DL is still trying to fly from JFK to Brazil after trying for a number of years. I don't think DL has quite recovered from CO beating them out 4 years ago. It'll be tough for them. You've got UA, CO , AA, Varig, and Transbrasil all in that market. That's staggering. I don't know if Brazil is ready for yet another gargantuan US airline to move in on Brazil's carriers in that market.

Many, many years ago CO flew to Maracaibo. I would expect to see that again soon. Due to the oil industry in IAH and Venezuela, it's highly doubtful DL would vie for Maracaibo flights from ATL.

IAH is the best suited hub for the Latin American markets. CO would be stupid not to expand.

These are all very interesting points brought up. I am wondering, after Vasp withdrew from the North American market, are any other carriers entitled to the slots? I would assume so, any info on this?

I heard CO will operate a special charter flight to one of those dirt airstrips in the Colombian jungle.

The 764 will fly in FARC guerrillas and fly out with a couple of metric tons of raw coca leaves.

Seems like some pretty good profit potential. I really see them building up the IAH hub with this.

That was humorous Chieftain!

CO does exceedingly well to Colombia. I went to BOG and Cartagena once. They're actually interesting places.

"Interesting" isn't quite the word.

Last I saw of it was an idyllic Cartagena beachfront patrolled by armed soldiers in the 1970's.
