Mon Sep 25, 2000 8:56 am

What are the ten most profitable routes for a major airline? Or maybe the top three?

For Delta, I would think the following would be profitable:

MCO-ATL
ATL-MCO

ATL-DFW
DFW-ATL

ATL-LAX
LAX-ATL

ATL-SFO
SFO-ATL

And many more!!!!!

ATL-MCO is probably not all that profitble as they are mostly leisure travelers, and AirTran competes heavily on the route.

Slawko....

I thought that YYC-YYZ would be in there too.......don't you think that YYC-YVR is no where near as profitable with the introduction of Westjet ?

For BWIA the 3 are POS-MIA, POS-YYZ and POS-JFK, I think. Within the Caribbean itself the most profitable route is probably POS-BGI (Trinidad to Barbados), with POS-ANU (Antigua), BGI-ANU and POS-GEO (Georgetown, Guyana) also being competitive. The routes to KIN (Kingston) may also turn out to be very profitable but were largely run as a mundane service in the past. With JM competing with BW for this operation things may change.

For Olympic Airways:
ATH-JFK (and vv)
It was a big debate over OA decision to replace the 747 with A340 on that route (and in general) because of the A340 shorter pax capacity.

For Lufthansa it`s the German domestic market, `cause LH is the only real German domestic carrier (unfortunately). It´s cheaper for me to fly from my homeairport HAJ to (i.e.) JFK via FRA than from HAJ to MUC.

Swissair's most profitable route is the 'UN-shuttle' from GVA to JFK.

Routes between SE Alaska and Seattle, Seattle and Anchorage, as well as intra-Alaska routes bring in a lot of money for AS. I would say those three types of routes are the most profitable, in that order. The profits from Alaska help to off-set the cost of competing with WN and UA in the lower 48.

SEA-LAX and routes to Mexico are also profitable, although not quite at the level of the others mentioned. Aircraft going to, and coming back from Mexico all get bunched up at the beginning and end of the day, so load factors are sometimes low on early morning SEA/PDX-LAX flights and evening LAX-PDX/SEA flights.

In SE Asia I'm pretty sure it's

HKG-TPE and v.v
HKG-BKK and v.v

These routes are flown by a ____ load of airlines!! And new airlines are coming in on these two routes. they're simply crazy.

For Finnair, I believe the following routes are most profitable (taking into account all recent activity):

HEL-JFK-HEL (Finnair's flagship route, 90.2% load factor)

HEL-BKK-SIN-BKK-HEL
HEL-BJS-HEL
HEL-NRT-HEL
(combined load factor 84.3%)

HEL-LHR-HEL
(flights to partner BA)

HEL-ARN-HEL
(almost hourly departures to Stockholm, shuttle service)

Plus the DL Shuttle and US Shuttle.

Both extremely profitable.
