Charter Flights From Europe To South America

Wed Sep 27, 2000 2:19 am

The recent announcement that Air 2000 and Airtours will both start charter flights from London-Gatwick to Brazil next year made me curious...

What other charter routes operate from Europe to South America? Which airlines operate the flights, and what aircraft do they use?

The above mentioned flights are the first regular programme of flights from the UK to Brazil since Monarch served Rio De Janeiro in 1989/90 with B757s.

Airtours will operate weekly from Gatwick to Salvador with A330-200s from November, seating 49 Premiair Gold passengers and 311 in economy.
Air 2000 will operate weekly from Gatwick, with flights operating to Recife or Natal on alternate weeks with B767-300ERs seating 38 Classic Premium and 274 in economy. Air 2000 are also the only other UK charter airline flying to South America with weekly flights from Manchester and Gatwick to Prolamar, Venezuela.

Do the main European charter carriers like Condor, LTU, Balair and Corsair serve South America? The flights from the UK are something new and different, so I'm wondering how strong the market would be for these holidays from the UK, and how strong the market is from the rest of Europe.

Thanks for your replies;

Condor and LTU definitely don't. I don't know about the others for sure though.

I know that Spannair serves Brazil, Chile and Argentina with 767-300's. they start in Madrid and fly via Tenerifa to South America.

You're right, except the Spanair flights are scheduled.

Jetsetter, I think that one of the Swiss or Dutch charters might fly to Isla Margarita, Venezuela. I think that's really about it.

Argentina occasionally gets a charter, but rarely, if ever from Europe (except for the regular Air France concorde charters, that fly down to Patagonia).

I would have thought the market for Brazil would be huge, they've just geared themselves up to receive the package tourist market, so my guess is those Airtours flights should be pretty full.

What a great route for the pilots.

I doubt they will visit Argentina, as it is far too expensive for the package holiday market, and fairly under-developed.

Gyro I notice you're in San Jose,

I was there in 1990 during the Xmas earthquake, remember? It came on CNN, amid the constant Gulf War reports.

Beautiful country, I remember going down to the Atlantic coast. Flew Pan Am A310-300

Well, depends on how you define South America. If you include the Caribbean and Mexico there are quite some flights by LTU, Condor and Hapag-Lloyd mainly to Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
If you don´t, the only one I recall is an LTU flight to Isla Margarita, Venezuela.

Condor serves Porlamar (Venezuela) which belongs to South America. In their winter schedule on wednesdays from Frankfurt, using B767-300:
DE 3106 09.55-14.50, DE 3107 16.20-07.00+

LTU serves Isla Margarita from DUS, winter schedule:
mondays: LT474 09.45-14.40 LT475 16.25-06.45+
saturdays: LT474 11.00-15.50 LT475 17.35-07.55+
using B767

Just as a correction to my original post, both Air 2000 (to Recife/Natal) and Airtours (to Salvador) start their flights in May 2001, NOT November 2001.

Thanks for all the information. I remember several years ago reading that Air Belgium flew to Brussels-Recife with B757s, so I assumed that if a small airline like Air Belgium flew there, Brazil must be quite a popular destination in Continental Europe. That seems not to be the case!
