Take A Bite Out Of A Nine

Thu Sep 28, 2000 3:04 pm

Take a look at this picture, taken off the TWA web site. Examine the tail rudder. Is it just my imagination, or does it actually look like a chunk of it was bitten off by some implacable prehistoric beast?

Well, I guess the updated forum won't let me post a link, so here's how to get to it.

1. Go to http://www.twa.com
2. In the upper right hand cortner, select "about TWA"
3. In taskbar, select "our fleet"
4. Select "DC-9"
5. See for yourself.

If you look at the full photo (available at Airliners.net) you can faintly see what looks like an unpainted or light colored rudder tab. It is most likely that the part was replaced but not painted.

The rudder tab on the DC-9/MD-80 is a balanced control surface; it cannot be painted on the A/C. This tab is probably a leased item and probably will be replaced by a TWA unit or removed and painted at a later date.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

... but for average page visitor looks rather strange. I think a picture of an aircraft should be chosen carefully as it is still the image of airline. And, again, why is it "Boeing DC-9"?! There was a topic here discussing this, and some strict explanations were found why it can be "Boeing DC-9" (and how about "Boeing DC-3"?), but still...
