Will Jetblue Begin Service To Denver?

Fri Sep 29, 2000 11:41 am

I've noticed that Jetblue is expanding fast. Will they begin service to Denver? We need another flight to JFK. Currently we have one non-stop daily flight to JFK on a Delta 757-200. United has almost 10 flights to LGA. If Jetblue decides to come, it would be very profitable. Any details?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If they did, it would be to Colorado Springs International (COS), for a couple of reasons.

#1: DIA has very high landing costs (I heard some news place say that)
#2: jetBlue seems to like serving slightly smaller airports (like ONT in LA, and OAK in SF)

But jetBlue might not inaugurate service to Colorado for some time, they still have yet to bring SLC on-line, which was announced a while ago.

Yeah they would probably go to Colorado Springs. Its not an international airport though. No international flights. Denver is international not Colorado Springs
Thanks for the info!

JetBlue seems to be doing really good, and I wish them all the best. But I would think that they need to slow down a bit first. I don't want them to turn into another PEOPLExpress, Valujet or Western Pacific.
Remember, all three of them were initially very popular and successful. But they got carried away with overexpansion in too short a period of time.

And we all know what became of them.

Mr. Neelman.....I know you've done your homework, but please....take it easy over there.....I'd like to see ya stick around for awhile!!!!

It would be nice if they came to Phoenix too, but there are a million non-stop flights to Kennedy and Newark from here. Maybe a market like Tucson would be good for Jetblue.

Why did they choose to go to Salt Lake?

Dear BA and all,

Denver would be an excellent choice for JetBlue. It has a big population base, sits atop two interstates, and is in the middle of its state. The DL 757 you mention probably feeds DL's international fights at JFK so it wouldn't compete with JetBlue.

But given David Neeleman's choices of Ontario over LAX and Oakland over SFO, you'd probably see JetBlue land at Colorado Springs. Either way a good choice.

Why JB chose Salt Lake so soon, before say BWI, MDW, or MIA is a mystery to me. Maybe they lobbied him heavily. Rochester's congressional delegation lobbied JetBlue heavily, which I think helpd us land them so soon.

Why SLC?....This is Neeleman's hometown and also home of the late Morris Airlines that he use to run.He is very familiar with SLC market.

JetBlue has a simple operating schedule. JB's west coast flights to OAK, ONT, and SLC are all red eyes to increase aircrafyt utilization when they would be worthlessly sleeping at JFK. SLC was chosen earlier because it fits the western red-eye model, and JetBlue is headquartered there. Neeleman's home town too.

777guy is right about SLC being Neeleman's hometown, so he knows the market. Also, less competition from both United And Frontier at DEN.

And JetBlue does their reservations out of SLC - another reason to link it up with their headquarters.

ScottB,
How can United and Frontier be a threat to Jetblue when they don't even fly to JFK from Denver?

One thing we're overlooking, DEN is fully leased. However, I bet they could lease some gate time from another carrier when they're not using a gate (I guess they can do that). For example, CO has 3 gates leased at Denver on councourse A with 13 or 14 flights a day.

Western Pacific had flights to EWR, and CO added them to not to be outdone. But CO dropped them once Western Pacific stopped flying that route. COS - NYC service it missed. I think Jet Blue would do great at either city.

Another very good option, i am told is nonstop JFK-ABQ.There is NYC service once a week on CO nonstop Newark-ABQ. The load factors have been very good there and the CO flight may go daily very soon. So if Jetblue started service to ABQ it could pre-empt CO. Interesting scenario.

Good loads at ABQ? Please elaborate, and at what fare are these loads good?

CO flight#130 Newark-ABQ is a new weekly service that started last March. Let me remind you that Santa Fe is about 60 miles north of ABQ. It is a haven for many mnay managers and executives of fortune 500 people. many of them have second homes there. Consequently on my several flights to and from ABQ first class has been close or very close to full with full fare passengers. Also ABQ is about the 7th highest tech city in the USA. It has the largest Intel plant in ABQ which generates much travel business. In addition you have a very high percentage of people out there that have relocated from the New York area, so that generates traffic. You have major universities out there and with that business and the retired teacheers etc more travel traffic is generated. In addition you have all the art collectors, art business, culture related business on and on it goes.On some of my flights there were large numbers of people that were going to or coming from Europe with connections in Newark. Twicee i tried to get a first class reservation and had to settle for coach as first class was sold out. Upon boarding i saw some of the famous and not so famous faces oin first class. The not so famous being heads of major cos.
Southwest is starting nonstop service from BWI-ABQ in December. remains to be seen how much, if any, it will cut into COs flight. Probably not much as it will generate more traffic to and from ABQ. For a long time ABQ got lost in the mix being surrounded by PHX and Denver. another big advantage for this CO flight is the problems at UA. Previously this required a change on UA at Denver. Prior to the latest labor problems UA came close to starting nonstop IAD-ABQ. With all the high tech business near IAD and in ABQ it could have been a gold mine. i am sure that once thge labor problems are resolved this service will start.hope this answers all your questions.
