What Will Happen To SkyWest Brasilias At Lax?

Fri Sep 29, 2000 12:36 pm

I was just in LAX and I saw that SkyWest had a huge fleet of EMB-120 Brasilias operating as United Express. I know that SkyWest is actively replacing them at SLC with CRJs where it operates as Delta Connection. But, does anyone know what will happen to them in LAX? Will they also be replaced by CRJs?

Doubt it....airports like PSP, SBY, etc have runways too short for the CRJ.

Chieftan:

FYI, PSP (Palm Springs) has a 9,375 ft runway and has regular flights operated with B757, B737. MD80, etc. They are more than capable of handling a CRJ.

SBY?? SBY - SALISBURY-OCEAN CITY WICOMICO REGIONAL AIRPORT?????

Do you mean SBA? Santa Barbara? If so they already have CRJ's flights by America West Express, not to mention the United Express 146's and United B737's! Also the maintenance facility there used to regularly handle jumbos. I have personally seen B747's, DC10's and L1011's there.

From what the Skywest folks across the hangar here in FAT tell me, the Brasillias will be used on intra-California flights for the forseeable future. Most of their routes are either too short or too thin to support regular RJ service. Personally, I'd like to see them offer RJ service from some of their Northern CA. destinations (Redding, Arcata/Eureka, maybe even Monterey) to LAX and/or SAN. No one else currently offers jet service north of SMF that I know of. Could be a moneymaker.........

Hi folks!

Just to let you know that I had the chance to fly Skywest in 1998/08/28 from FAT to LAX. I expected to fly a United Express one but in the end it was a Skywest one. I also remember seeing a lot of them at LAX! If they're changing top CRJ that's great. I remember also seeing landing at FAT MD80's but I don't know the airline. I was in Dinuba and I was right in the landing path for FAT.

CRJmech - some questions!

In the day I let FAT ( 1998/08/28 ) I saw some 5/6 F-18 from the Navy parked there and also I saw taking off a C-54, do you know what airline was that Skymaster?
It looked like a fire-fighter plane, could be?

Regards!

The MD-80 you saw was an AA bird. They offer daily flights (unsure how many) to DFW. The F/A-18s were most likely from Lemoore NAS (a 45 min. drive from FAT). They often stop here for fuel. As for the C-54, it probably was a fire bomber as you guessed. CDF keeps several S-2 bombers and an OV-10 spotter based here year 'round. They're supplemented with other types from other bases when a fire is nearby. Hope this helps.

PSP does have MD80 service from AA, and a Saturday only 733 ORD-PSP on UAL. I am flying next Thursday, CLE-DEN-LAX-PSP. I get to fly on a A320, Triple Seven, and the EMB-120! The return has a 757 instead of a A320.

Hey Crjmech: there is one morning flight to DFW and an evening flight from DFW. I have flown on both flights.
I have a question for you: How is the terminal construction effecting operations at FAT?

Thanks for the clairification- I knew AA left in the morning and came back at night, but I didn't know what happened during the day (I'm usually asleep then). The terminal expansion has been a huge pain in the arse as far as ground ops go. As you may have seen, the end of the terminal building is now an open pit. The MD-80 and the two Eagle Saabs that used to park there have been moved to the west side of the terminal. Parking space is now at a premium. No one is happy with the situation. For example, Eagle parks their planes one behind the other immediately to the left of us (Mesa). Their first flight leaves shortly after 6am. Typically, we will bring in a plane from the hangar shortly before 6 for its 6:40 departure. Usually, the rearmost Saab is the early plane out. Even with us on our gate, they can easily taxi out. However, they have twice now attempted to make the forward plane first out. This is almost impossible with our RJ at the gate. They asked us if we could push back both times and we refused (crew was already doing pre-flight and fuel was on the way). So they had to push back (they have a tug) once and actually managed to taxi out the second time. Needless to say, they have no love for us. Sorry this was rambling and off the original topic, but it's been bothering me for a while. They can't get done with the terminal soon enough to suit me.

I am originally from San Luis Opispo, CA (SBP) and now attend college at UCSD, hence the SAN in my name. Well, SBP is one of the smaller airports served in CA, and there has been a big fuss about terminal upgrades and runway extensions, because many of the locals are angry about the prospect of getting jet service. People that live near the airport just don't want the noise. Little do they realize that these aircraft are actually just as quiet if not quiter. During some town meetings airport speakers said that they didn't expect jets until at least 2004, and that the upgrades were being made just so that fully loaded Saab 340's and the Embraer 120's could take off fully loaded on hot days. So unless they were lying, I don't think we should expect wide-spread use of the rj's for quite a while on the west coast

As of Oct. 1st, the CRJ is operating as United Express by SkyWest from FAT-DEN, and back. They will be adding more destinations soon. The will most likly bring them on trips from FAT-SFO, and SFO-PSP, PSP-LAX, LAX-FAT, SFO-MFR, and some of the other long trips.
I hope that they will operate them into SMF, because I fly there on a Brasilia a lot, infact i'm going tomorrow.

Always fly SkyWest
