Who Has Ever Flown On An American DC-10?

Sun Oct 01, 2000 10:59 pm

TWA is now retirering it's last 727 so I can understand why there are discussions in the forum about TWA 727's, the latest topic being who has ever flown on one. But the other thing that will happen is this: American will retire it's last DC-10 before the end of this year. So I'm now doing the same for the American DC-10 like what has been done in the forum about the TWA 727. I have flown quite a few times on an American DC-10 (both 10 and 30) between 1988 and 1993, during the late 80's and early 90's American still had a lot of DC-10's with many of them in service on domestic flights. I flew on a lot of them within the United States and I also flew on one from Brussels to Chicago in 1991. American used to come to Brussels on the DC-10, from Chicago. Who else has ever flown on an American DC-10?

I flew on one from the London Heathrow-somewhere in the USA (i don't remember where)... I was around 5 years old... but I remember walking down the jetway, and looking at the big, shiny, silver, sleek, jet. Then when we took off, it was like a person had put a pot on your head, and was banging it with a metal rod, it was very noisy. l-)

I've flown on several AA DC-10's and am very sad to hear that it's on it's way out at AA aswell. The DC-10 is one of my all time favourite airplanes... I've flown AA DC-10's from Puerto Rico to Miami a couple of times... the airline whose DC-10's I've flown the most with is LH, when it flew from San Juan to Frankfurt... Do you know what AA is going to do with them?

Actually, I believe as of today AA is replacing all of its DC-10s to Hawaii w/ 763s. Every time I've been to Hawaii(11 times) it has been on an AA DC-10, usually from DFW or ORD. I'm sort of sick of them, because I've flown them 75% of the time I've flown long haul(Hawaii w/ AA and Transtlantic w/ CO). Can' wait till the 764 and 777 when I go to France!

I flew an AA DC10 from SAN to ZRH via ORD, when I was very little. I remember that we had an aborted takeoff departing from SAN.

Hey, this is fun trying to remember every flight for the last 25 years.Just posted some memories on the TWA 727. Have flown on dozens of AA DC-10 flights from early 77 thru 98. Over the years ORD to LAX, PHX, SFO. IND-ORD,LAX to JFK,BOS, MIA. MIA to SJU. ALso BOS-ORD, I believe LGA-ORD at one time also. The last one was from DFW-LAX. Hmm, If I had all the money for the fares spent over these years I'd be one rich guy! LOL!...

I flew on two AA DC10's in 1992, from MSY to DFW and back. It will be a sad day when they are retired, although I will certainly weep more when Delta's L1011's are retired.

Back in 1989, I flew on an AA DC-10 from SFO to HNL. However, I missed the return flight and came back on a Hawaiian L-1011.

Back in 1983, I flew one HNL-LAX. In 1989 and 1993, I flew it PHX-ORD and back. About 10 years ago, I remember spotting 3 DC-10s at the PHX terminal at the same time. It must have been because of ATC delays at ORD.

I was raised in an American Airlines family so I lost count a long time ago how many times I've been on AA DC-10's.

I get two Hawaiian DC-10-10 trips in December (LAX-LAS-LAX)....They are either leased from AA or are former AA aircraft. Does that count too?

1990: HNL-LAX and LAX-HNL
1998: HNL-SFO and SFO-HNL

I have also flown several times on American owned DC-10-10 and DC-10-30 leased to Hawaiian Air.

I thought American will still keep some DC-10s to fly the Continental US-Hawaii routes, as they claim these routes are not money makers. Have I been misinformed?
Also, what will American use on these routes? 767-300s and 777s I presume?

Yo Aaron, was that late 1987 perhaps? I was FE on AA DC10 that aborted takeoff at SAN during that time frame. Red Master Warning light flashed shortly after begining takeoff roll. Never did figure out what the problem was. Reset flaps/slats, triple-checked everything (again) and departed about 30 minutes later without incident.

>...it was very noisy.

Loudest air distribution system of any airliner I have ever been on. 5 different control zones and the FA's were constantly complaining about either temperature or noise.

I have had several opportunities to fly American's DC-10s, in all three classes of service. While most of the flights were JFK-LAX/SAN, I have also ridden them on several other domestic runs. My last American DC-10 flight, in June, 1998, was JFK-LAX in First Class - what a dinner! I had hoped to go to Hawaii just to fly the 10 one more time before they're retired, but the flights are too full for that to happen. It looks like my last DC-10 flight will remain my first United Airlines flight, LAX-HNL in July, 1999.

I have been on 4 AA DC-10's.

AKL - HNL - OGG - HNL - AKL

That was in the early nineties when they flew here briefly.

As a "local boy," I have flown countless times to/from Hawai'i on AA's DC10s in both First Class and Coach. As a matter of fact, I just returned from Hawaii 2 days ago, on what will probably be my last AA DC10 experience, and a pleasurable one it was.

AA is currently replacing the last of their Hawaii DC10 fleet with 763s and 752s, and the transition is scheduled to be completed by November 1st. What a sad day it'll be when AA's DC10 soars for the last time.

I flew on an AA DC10-10 (JFK-LAX) in March of '99. The flight was delayed about 30 minutes due to a problem with the rear door. The only fun part of the flight were the gusty winds on departure at JFK. The seating was quite cramped but all in all a good flight. Jeff

I flew Honolulu to LAX on an AA DC-10 in October '97. I had spent the weekend in Honolulu returning from two weeks in Australia. It was a great flight.

I flew on an AA DC-10-30 in '93 DFW-SAT. I wish I would have cared more about planes at that time and had a camera. I remember walking on to the plane thinking I'd somehow gotten on the wrong one! It was during Christmas time and I was returning from MSP. I have no idea why they had a DC-10 going from DFW-SAT.

I have been on quite a few AA DC-10-10s. In fact this past Friday I flew to San Francisco on AA and our MD-80 pulled up beside one, N126AA. When I got inside the terminal, I went over to its gate to see where it was going, but there were no signs there. It was midnight, and it had probably come in from HNL. The exit doors were either open all the way or half way, and as we taxied by it, I could see a bulkhead with a movie screen on it. The leading edge flaps were extended, and I watched them retract while two men stood in front of the wing. I don't know what that was all about. Could it have had its last flight and was being taken out of service?

April of '91, Miami to LAX, packed flight and the takeoff roll lasted forever. Sad to see them go...

I flew one ORD-LAX in December 1978, as a wide-eyed ten-year old. It was my first-ever ride on a jumbo. At that age just about any plane will seem spacious, but later trips on LH DC-10s in high school found the nine-across seats still quite comfortable for my then-trim 5'11 frame.

The 10 is a fine plane, sorry to see them disappearing.

I have flown on American Airlines DC-10s many times.
ORD-LAX numerous times 1975-92
JFK-LAX 1985.

Some of my best flights were on American Airlines DC-10s. They rode so comfortably and handled turbulence very well. In fact the DC-10 and 747 are the only two jets I can sleep on.
This is like a piece of my childhood going away. I have many cherished memories on AA's DC-10s. They are so beautiful with its shiny aluminum body and red, white & blue strip down the side.
This jet will be missed.

I flew what will most likely be my final AA DC-10 flight in August when I went LAX-HNL. I also flew the AA DC-10 between LAX-JFK and LAX-DFW in the early '90s.

Even this year, the DC-10 was a beautifully maintained aircraft with a clean interior and shiny exterior. It will be sad to see them go, as they are as distinctive as a 747 in this world of two-engined widebodies.

My first flight on an AA DC-10-10 was in 1983 between DFW and SAT when I was reporting to USAF Basic Training at Lackland AFB. The flight I took from BOS to DFW was on a 722 where I was stuck in the middle seat waaaay in the back near the rear exit. Getting on the big shiny '10 at DFW was an exciting change, even if it was a short flight. I was with a group of about 50 others who were showing up for basic training that evening and the FA's were pretty nice to us.

My last AA DC-10 flight was from LHR to DFW in 1990. I was still active duty AF at the time and was traveling to OMA to prepare with our sister Squadron for an exercise at Nellis AFB. The Y class cabin on this DC-10-30 was overbooked and since my traveling companion and I we were dressed in suit and tie, we got upgraded to business class. It was my first experience in business class and I really loved the service. The seating was 2-3-2 and I ended up in the middle seat, but I have to admit that this was one time that I didn't mind - the leg room was fantastic! We were then squeezed into an MD-80 for the DFW-OMA leg which was excruciating, especially given the fine treatment and all that leg room that we enjoyed from LHR to DFW. I'll be sad to see them go!

I flew one from RDU-LGA, RDU-San Juan (forgot airport code) when AA had its big hub in RDU. I was so excited b/c the DC-10 was the biggest plane to fly in to RDU at the time (now it is a AA 763, and AA 762 from LGW)...All I have to say is that the DC-10 was awesome, but they need to be replaced by the 763 asap.

Last year the wife and I flew from ORD-HNL & back on our honeymoon - my first time on a -10 and most likely last. Those planes were both packed and the flights were looooong, especially on the way over. Admittedly, I was not too happy w/the -10 probably because of the packed flight, the interior of the plane was pretty ratty (understandable as N144AA was retired late last year), and a rather noisy 9 hr flight to HNL on seats well past their prime........well, this morning on my way to ABQ via ORD on AA, I happened to see N137AA loading up for it's flight to HNL, and boy did it bring back memories of an awesome honeymoon.....will I miss the AA -10's??? Yes and no!!!

Regards,
TR

I flew on a DC-10 from detroit to chicago in 1979. It was about 3 months after the big DC-10 crash in chicago. It felt very strange flying knowing what happened there, but I had a really great flight even though it was a short hop. The DC-10 was always my favorite plane. I'm sorry to see them go.

I flew the DC-10 from DFW to HNL in 1994. For a 16 year old kid on his first flight, I enjoyed every minute of it. Now coming back at night and being awake for 36+ hours was not as much fun. I did enjoy talking to the FA's in the back for several hours about various AA aircraft. That was the only two flights I had on an American DC-10 but I still fly AA whenever I can.
