My first flight on an AA DC-10-10 was in 1983 between DFW and SAT when I was reporting to USAF Basic Training at Lackland AFB. The flight I took from BOS to DFW was on a 722 where I was stuck in the middle seat waaaay in the back near the rear exit. Getting on the big shiny '10 at DFW was an exciting change, even if it was a short flight. I was with a group of about 50 others who were showing up for basic training that evening and the FA's were pretty nice to us.
My last AA DC-10 flight was from LHR to DFW in 1990. I was still active duty AF at the time and was traveling to OMA to prepare with our sister Squadron for an exercise at Nellis AFB. The Y class cabin on this DC-10-30 was overbooked and since my traveling companion and I we were dressed in suit and tie, we got upgraded to business class. It was my first experience in business class and I really loved the service. The seating was 2-3-2 and I ended up in the middle seat, but I have to admit that this was one time that I didn't mind - the leg room was fantastic! We were then squeezed into an MD-80 for the DFW-OMA leg which was excruciating, especially given the fine treatment and all that leg room that we enjoyed from LHR to DFW. I'll be sad to see them go!
