I flew this route last year and if im not mistaken, something like 4hrs 30 mins.
As for equipment, Ansett Australia use A320s and B767s. Qantas use B767s, B737s and four times a week the B747-300/400(flights operate onwards to Johannesburg). If you happen to be flying South African Airways then it could be from a range of its 747s, the SP, -200, -300 or -400.

It depends on the time of year and the equipment being used.

Westbound, the domestic services (both AN's B767's and A320's and QF's B767's and B734's) take 5 hrs, and about 4:15 Eastbound. The B747's used by QF are about 10 min quicker.

Try and get on either QF23 / 24 or QF 63/64. As these (as mentioned above) continue/come from Africa and the equipment used is 747-300/400.

I reccomend these flights as Qantas is to discontinue its Sydney/Perth/
Johannesburg QF63/64 services from 3/01.

The last flight of QF 23/24 will be THU26OCT/FRI27OCT.

So if you want a 747 flight get in before the above mentioned dates.

Tim,

Why would QF stop their SYD-PER-JNB rtn flights? I thought Africa was quite profitable for QF. Is it they are going SYD-JNB direct (long trip - probably payload restricted) or codesharing with SAA?

What is your source for this as I have looked up a couple of sights and nothing displays this?

B727-200

The QF bit seems to be correct. There are also rumours in South Africa of this happening. The gist is that QF will codeshare on SA services.

I am sure one of the QF boys will be able to confirm this.

Cheers

B727-200,

I agree with you. I cant understand why they are ditching it either. Its bad for Perth Spotters to.   Less QF 747's!

My source is a couple of travel agent contacts.
They definently wont be doing direct SYD-JNB with the 744's.

"Qantas will discontinue its Sydney/Perth/
Johannesburg QF63/64 services from 3/01.
With QF 23/24 finishing on THU26OCT/FRI27OCT.

It is almost certain that from this date South African Airways flights SA280/281, will terminate in Perth when Qantas eventually pulls off the route.

Rumour has it that South African Airways may also uplift the aircraft size to B744, and that services could run daily. "

Possible codeshare I suppose?
I dont understand why they are handing it all to SAA. But if the SAA 744 terminates in Perth, QF must be flying the PER-SYD sector with 747 classic or 763 aircraft?
Should make for some interesting observations.

Hi All

Im rather dissappointed to hear this news as well. Being one of the few Perth spotters here it will be a sad day when that flight stops. We've already lost our only daily 744 service when BA pulled out of Perth to be replaced by QF 763's.

I get the feeling that SAA will be moving to 744's as there was one in Perth today. Im not sure if it had anything to do with the olympics or not but its certainly a first as far as I know in Perth. Myself and TAA_Airbus got pics of it and will have them online ASAP (As long as Airliners.net accepts them)

Regards

Greg,

SAA operated a few 744's into Perth and Sydney before and during the olympics due to the games.

Was BA not to start operating LHR_JNB_PER?

If so this would account for the lack of QF service as the BA flights would "keep it within the one-world family"

Personally I dont think QF will cancel their Oz flights
from South Africa.
QF have cancelled QF 064/063 for 06/13/20 Nov
but only for those dates. They will discontinue their
Harare flights because of the fuel situation and low
yields there. This was the flight via Harare
It would be interesting to see BA RSA/OZ but I dont
think it will happen.Up to the 80s we had a BA flight
JNB SEYCHELLES COLOMBO HONG KONG/TOKYO and
return but it is doubtful whether SA government would
grant rights to BA for JNB PER.
