Wwii Bomb Explodes At Airport

Mon Oct 02, 2000 7:42 am

I did not see this on airliners.net so I decided to post it

WWII bomb explodes at airport

A World War Two-era bomb exploded at an airport in the German town of Siegen Thursday, blowing a 50-foot-wide hole in the runway moments after a passenger plane had landed, police said.
No one was injured by the blast, which left a crater several yards deep and forced officials to shut the airport.

The bomb exploded at the small regional airport in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia just hours before Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands was to land there Friday for a private visit in the nearby state of Hesse, authorities said.

The bomb, which was buried beneath the runway, blew up only minutes after a passenger plane had landed. Authorities said vibrations from the plane may have set off the aging bomb.

"We assume it was a large World War Two-era bomb," said a police spokesman in the town south of Cologne. "All other possibilities have been categorically ruled out."

Thousands of unexploded bombs are buried in Germany, many dropped by U.S. and British planes during World War Two.

Munitions experts are racing against time to find the bombs before they become unstable and explode. Police said they would investigate whether other unexploded bombs were buried at the airport.

Anymore news as this is 2 days old?

I wouldn't be surprised if there are still undiscovered German bombs from the Battle of Britain and the Blitz of 1940 still buried in areas around London and other British cities.

There are many unexploded bombs in the River Thames that runs through central London as well as many suburbs outside London. How many peple have been killed so far due to unexploded bombs from WW2 can anyone answer this? Ther have been rumors that bombs also lie under LHR, GAT and Stansted. I pray the rumors are false. If an unexploded bomb went off under a 747-400 at LHR while taxing the results would be devistating.

Interesting topic. Especially since I'm currently reading "Three Engines, Half a Wing, and a Prayer, B-17's over Germany".

WW2 bombs are frequently found in Hong Kong. Most are in construction sites where exavation vehicles digging to build the foundation uncover these bombs.
I've never heard about that incident.

Wouldn't you think that when the taxiways & runways at Gatwick, Heathrow, and Stansted were constructed they would have found unexploded ordinance from WW2? What about the US Air Force bases in the UK and in Germany, could there be some bombs still buried there that could explode and harm American military personnel?
