ATR, BBD, EMB, Etc Orders 2011 Take 2

Tue Jun 28, 2011 4:39 am

Alas life got busy, and no orders left the last thread to go off into the archives, but after Paris there was much updating to do. Here is to my knowledge a complete list of the orders for the 'other' manufactures this year. If you have any additions or corrections please let me know.

Old thread link

Should be interesting to find out who all those C Series orders are for, especially given that that's about all BBD has had going for it this year for whatever reason the Q400 has been surprisingly silent...

Quoting iceberg210 (Thread starter):
UTair - 20 - ATR 72-500 (4/7/11) (Left off the Paris Air Show Press Release, perhaps just pending now?)

Unlikely to have simply been "left off" the press release. More likely to be the 20 undisclosed 72-500s which were counted in the 2010 orders?

Added COMAC

Been a bit of a lull after the Paris Air show, still interesting to see how even with the better than advertised performance of the CRJ1000 and even with high cost of fuel the Q400 aren't getting much if any love this year...

Quite a post show lull, but both GECI and RUAG added a few orders... Nice to see a couple orders for the Do228. Anyone have any idea how many travelers Cape Air picked up? Thanks for the help...

MONTREAL—Bombardier Inc. (TSX: BBD.B) has received a firm order for four Q400 turboprop airliners with a total list price of US$126 million.

Maybe this could be related:

InterSky, a small airline providing service from FDH to TXL, DUS, CGN, VIE amongst others signed a codeshare deal with Air Berlin and wants to replace its 4 Dash 8-300 with Q400's or ATR-72, according to the cited article.

Here is an interesting one.

Ilyushin Finance plans to take up to 20 CSeries

Russian lessor Ilyushin Finance has signed a tentative agreement to take up to 20 Bombardier CSeries twinjets, a potential landmark deal for the type.

Ilyushin Finance is to acquire seven CS300s and three CS100s under a pact - so far amounting to a letter of intent - which includes purchase rights on another 10 aircraft.

ATR's record year rolls on... Bit disconcerting I would imagine for BBD, to have your competitor to have five times the orders for their prop as you have for yours...

ATR

Firm
ALC 2 ATR-72-600 (9/29/2011)

That makes 185 firm orders and 72 options so far this year, versus only 21 Q400. ATR is effectively taking over the 50-70 seat turboprop market.

Yes, it makes you wonder what's up at BBD. Obviously the turboprop market is doing pretty darn well, and why they haven't had more success with the Q400 whether it be economics, price what not, it's a very odd thing for them to be cutting production of the chief competitor to an aircraft in the ATR that's having a record year.

Again I don't know the reason BBD is struggling so much in this market, but they need to figure it out quickly, continuing to cut production just increases your costs, and makes availability tougher which only helps your competitor, and ATR needs no help lately...

Their product is overpriced. The Q's have good operating costs, but not good enough to offset their high purchase price.

This seems to be the common reason given, I'd believe it although I for the life of me don't understand why BBD doesn't lower that price now and then to get business or just to keep the line moving. I suppose my point is my only reluctance in believing this is that means that either their sales, or corporate culture don't allow them enough flexibility in pricing, which seems silly in this industry where insanely huge discounts are the norm. (20, 30 percent etc...)

That's the only reason why I've in the past been unwilling to commit to that being the one issue, but it would make sense I suppose... Although I know it'll never happen I'd love to see two competitive bids from ATR and BBD to see how close or far apart they are... It'd be really interesting to hear from the airline side of things why they are going in droves to one side of this equation...

Meanwhile EMB continues to have a very nice year. I love how they are just flying under the radar at this point amongst all the new product from all the newcomers to the playing field, C Series, SSJ, MRJ, ARJ, etc etc, and yet they just keep running along with the EJets, and continue to have an over 100 orders year.

Whatever the issue, it must be solved and soon. If it is price... Bombardier needs to figure out how to cut the price.

Averaging prices stated at various aircraft sites, the price of a new Q400 seems to be in the $23-30 million range; an ATR-72 is about $19 million. For many airlines, the performance advantages of the Q400 seem not be worth the price Bombardier wants to charge.

The quick way to lower the price is probably to move labor-intensive portions of manufacturing out of Canada, something Canada doesn't want to see happen.

Not always... Depends the certification cost of logistics and certification of the company that is out of Canada. (look at the logistics trouble for 787: extra cost can be absorbed on such a program, not on a prop like Q400)

Another factor is the priority given to the development of regional jets.
On solution would be completely quit the prop market. As a short term solution, it looks the best. But maybe they consider it is safer to keep expertise in props. By this way, if market decides to shift back to props, because of high fuel cost, they will be able to react quickly, and then, they will be aggressive in terms of price, cost,...

What I don't understand is while labor might be a tad pricey in Canada, it's not like the EU isn't high labor cost either. It seems to me if that is really the price differential that BBD is just either greedy, or HAS to do something to reduce costs.

Seems to me with ATR having orders for over 100 of their aircraft this year while what I would argue being the competitive RJ product for that (the CRJ) has 7 orders, plus the E170/5 has 16 this year that the market has already shifted to props. That's what I would be awfully worried about if I were in BBD's shoes. Your competition is selling like hot cakes, and you're cutting production. Something is VERY VERY wrong with this picture...

21 Q400 orders this year
117 ATR 72 orders this year.

To be outsold by a factor of five when you do have a good competitive product, is just insane, and I'm not about to beat up on BBD, I don't know all the factors involved here, but something is very rotten in Montreal if they are having this much of an issue in selling that aircraft in this market that is finally hopping on the prop bandwagon again.

At least AirBaltic hates their new Dash 8-400 planes they got as part of compensation for SAS (and even publicly blame them). They have a lot of technical issues (like http://www.avherald.com/h?article=43444834&opt=0), also public perseption of their realibility here is poor.

Indeed, clearly the 70-seat market has shifted to props. Only the E190 is still holding strong in the 90-seat market. BBD might as well give up on the CRJ's (hardly any backlog anyway) and start seriously promoting (and discounting) the Q400 that they seem to have abandoned. The way ATR is taking over the prop market is crazy, if BBD doesn't move they will lose the CRJ and the Q400 market and be left with CSeries only.

Given what's been said on this forum one has to question BBD interest in the success in the Q400 I think the Q400 could perhaps put the nail in the coffin for the CRJ and BBD perhaps does not want this. If BBD were more aggressive with pricing which customers do you guys think they could secure for the Q

They have to keep the price of planes high to cover what they lose on rail cars.

Bombardier Transportation increased its revenues by 26%, reaching $2.7 billion for the second quarter ended July 31, 2011, compared to $2.1 billion for the same period last fiscal year. EBIT was $191 million, compared to $148 million last fiscal year, translating into an EBIT margin of 7.2% versus 7% last fiscal year. Free cash flow usage amounted to $473 million for the second quarter ended July 31, 2011, compared to a usage of $122 million for the same period last fiscal year. The order backlog totalled $33.9 billion as at July 31, 2011, compared to $33.5 billion as at January 31, 2011.

Hmm probably not. It's not great numbers but sure good enough.
Its rail subsidiary is HQ:ed in Berlin, Germany.
And with rail booming in a way not seen since before the second world war the Transport division is placed in exactly the right spot and I admire Bombardier for building the unit through acquisitions of many large rail players at exactly the right time. Takes foresight or luck to be a couple of years ahead and Bombardier had it and they will benefit a lot from it.
Maybe they have bet that rail will overtake aviation on short distances.

This deal has been expanded with GECAS taking 6 more E-190s plus 6 options.

Embraer said GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) has inked a contract for six Embraer 190s, plus six options, with the right to convert to the E-195. The total value of the deal is $256.8 million at list prices. Delivery will begin in the 2012 fourth quarter, Embraer said.
Embraer said this new contract expands on the agreement for two E-190s announced at the Paris Air Show in June

Quoting MillwallSean (Reply 31):
Maybe they have bet that rail will overtake aviation on short distances.

As you point out, Bombardier is currently profitable, but historically (as with airlines) consistent profits have been a challenge for them, especially in the rail car business. Their present backlog is a little over two years production; that may become a problem. I wish them well.

Here is another announcement though this one from COMAC and quite substantial.

ICBC Leasing has announced today they will order 45 C919s

SHANGHAI -- ICBC Leasing on Wednesday signed a deal with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd (COMAC) to buy 45 of the nation's homegrown C919 large passenger planes.

The financial leasing arm of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the country's largest lender, signed the new order as it sought to expand its fleet size to cash in on the country's rapidly growing demand for air services.

Neither side revealed the order's value.

ATR keeps rolling on, EMB picks up some nice business orders (they've signed a bunch of legacies lately) and BBD gets a 'conditional order'. More of the same pretty much except that COMAC has caught fire recently signing 65 more C919. Some welcome good news I'm sure after all the ARJ21 problems that keep popping up...

RE: ATR, BBD, EMB, Etc Orders 2011 Take 2

Tue Nov 15, 2011 4:35 pm

ATR seems to have bagged a few more frames at Dubai:

The European turboprop manufacturer ATR and Russia’s NordStar Airlines today announced they have agreed the purchase of up to 7 ATR 42-600s (5 firm aircraft and 2 options). The total value of all these airplanes is estimated at some US$ 132 million.

ATR and NordStar had previously unveiled in September 2011 an order for 2 firm ATR 42-600s plus 2 options, which has now been increased with the 3 additional firm aircraft. This follows an order in 2010 for 4 firm 42-500s plus 3 options.

The ATR 42/72 family has had an excellent year:

The 3 additional firm orders of NordStar bring to 148 the total firm sales of ATR since the beginning of the year, further consolidating its commercial yearly record. ATR has also booked options for 72 aircraft since January 1st 2011.

Another important factor to note about the ATR is that, broadly speaking, it's a more capable aircraft when operated to small airports and runways. In many cases you can operate an AT7 where you previously only had 50 seat props.

COMAC receive another domestic leasing order. This time for 30 C919 from Bocom Leasing.

Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China won an order for 30 C919 aircraft from Bank of Communications Co. (3328)’s leasing arm, the third deal in about a month for the nation’s first passenger jet.

The agreement raises the order backlog for the single-aisle plane to 195, Shanghai-based Comac said in an e-mailed statement today. It didn’t give a value for the contract.

Be interesting to see where the backlog of 195 are placed other than Sichuan Airlines and Myanmar Airways who have ordered directly.

China Aircraft Leasing have signed a purchase agreement for 20 COMAC C919s. If anything, domestic demand is good,

China Aircraft Leasing Company (CALC) has inked a purchase agreement for 20 Comac C919s, bringing the Chinese manufacturer's total order backlog for the narrowbodies to 215.

This is the fourth major commitment for the aircraft since October and the aircraft lessor has become Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China's (Comac) 10th customer for the C919.

FlightGlobal

Main question I have is how many can be placed outside of mainland China?

First,
Thanks to everyone for updating the totals. I've been lurking here and enjoying 'soaking it in.'

Quoting iceberg210 (Reply 45):
CS100 31

66 C-series is not the sum I wanted for 2011.

Unless there is a last minute order, I fully expect 'that to be all' for 2011.

Embraer has been a nice surprise in 2011. If someone had asked me how many they had sold, my guess would have been too low. Good for them.
