Oh yes, this opened a month or so ago...

Way too modern for my liking, I loved the communist chic of the main one (which apparently has it's days numbered).

My friend is visiting in September, so I'm hoping for a few shots of the inside. I guess it can only improve the painful speed of the old immigration!
Can't wait to revisit sometime in the Winter..

Americans can go, too. You might be heavily controlled or chaperoned while you're there, but American tourists have managed to go.

I went on a tour last August.
American's have no issues visiting now, the friend I mentioned came with me last year on an 11 day tour. Yanks could previously only visit for 4 days.

And I hope it all goes to plan Maverick, it's a stunning country.

I did a little research earlier this year, and suprisingly you can find several different tour options to visit. The only question you have to ask yourself is whether or not you want to spend money to support the regime in power there.

To stay on topic however, I'm curious what a "busy" day at Pyonyang is like. For some reason I can also imagine a them building a huge terminal that rarely gets used.

Best holiday I've ever been on, if you like history you'd *love* it there.
You get the chance to experience their version of the Korean War (The 'Victorious Fatherland Liberation War' in North Korea)

It's pricey to get there, but once you get in everything's cheap as chips. Koryo Tours are the main tour group taking groups in, but they are also the most overpriced. I have been looking at others for when I go back.

As for busy days in Pyongyang, it's pretty hectic at rush hour. People trotting off to work, crowding into the back of lorries and before that the propaganda trucks with their ear bleedingly loud music and quotes to wake up the proletariat

This was discussed in another thread a while back. IIRC, it was some enthusiast or similar in a country other than North Korea who set it up.

I'm reminded of the Pyongyang subway. Foreign diplomats and other important visitors are taken to see a grandiose station or two (decorated with huge portraits of Kim Il-Sung, of course), modern trains, employees in their impeccable uniforms, and so on. The thing is, there is a strong possibility that the subway is not actually used as a means of transportation, but is merely a showpiece for demonstrating North Korea's progress.

I think if you have money, they're willing to take it. Unless you're a journalist, and even then they'll probably figure out a way to take your money and make sure you don't see anything that portrays the country in a negative light.

We went in 2010, literally in between the Bishkek and Osh riots. We booked the tickets and the following day the government fell. A month later we had a great visit without problems, and a week after leaving the deadly riots in Osh blew up.

Firstly no, the subway couldn't possibly be staged.. I went there last year and people weren't acting, it's just a typical OTT communist Metro.. Look at the ex-pact countries, they all have elaborate Underground stations.

And as for it being a nuclear bunker, you're 100% right.
It's 150 metres underground at most points and there are about 5 blast at the stations. 2 on top and I think three underground. So you'd be pretty safe down there if there was a war!

I am fascinated by North Korea and have been studying books, films, documents, etc. about the place as a hobby for several years now. I have also always been interested in public transportation (cannot explain why). I personally think that the subway DOES exist beyond those two stops, and that it is used as a normal part of transportation. If anything, the rest of the stations are run down and far from beautiful, which is why the tourists are kept to those two stations.

Of course it does, I personally feel that they only use the main few stops because they come out in the best areas. If they were to take you too far on the Metro you'd be taken into the much less desirable parts of the capital.

We visited three stops (a first apparently), and admittedly the third one that not many see was less fancy...

That said, there is plenty of photos of how the other stations are (or were when built anyway)

I shall try and get one of my acquaintances to upload a shot or two. Apparently they went into it a week or so back, 'quite airy and Chinese' I'm told

Part 2 of the vice guide to North Korea ( a great watch overall ) has some video of the metro. It's the last portion of the video, starting at 14:29.

http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title...ide_to_north_korea_episode_2_of_3/

In this video the journalists are only allowed to see the two nice stations, but it's clearly being used by the citizens (for real) as a mode of transport. Having said that, it does seem that the ridership is not very heavy compared to what I'm sure public transport is like in similiarly dense asian cities. Perhaps only certain people get to ride?

Hate to disappoint you, but actually this terminal is not fake. It was in use in June this year when I visited the DPRK. Pretty basic, no shops and the same hall handles incoming and outgoing flights. There are one or two baggage belts, two gates. Certainly it won't win any awards (well, maybe inside the DPRK...), but at least ist offers decent views of the tarmac and you get to walk to the plane when it's parked close to the terminal.

It's a shame. There was a charm about their old terminal, the giant chandelier and the feeling you were just about to board a giant propliner or 707. A special something that modern airports can't replicate. Something from a bygone era that to me, was quite unique and beautiful.
