UA At LGB On 8/21

Yesterday, a UA 738 landed at LGB around 3:30pm PST. Was this a charter? If not, what was it for?

Had to be a charter. Plane came in from LAX just before 3 and then left for MSP at 5p.

They were in town playing the Angels.

If you look at a map SNA, isn't more than 3-4 miles shorter than LGB from the Big A. Both are under 15 miles from the Big A.

If I were a bus driver, I'd want avoid the 405 at all costs. Even on a Sunday afternoon. I'd much rather go to Anaheim from the Costa Mesa/Santa Ana area than Long Beach any day.

Slots are only for regularly scheduled commercial ops at LGB, so it's not an issue. There are charters all the time for a variety of reasons.

You don't need the 405. You can shoot straight down the 91 to the 5 from LGB. Regardless, on a Sunday afternoon none of those will be a problem.

It could very well be an issue of cost and service. LGB is a lower cost airport than SNA and I imagine that there are better facilities available for handling the charter.

I rarely fly into LGB -- I don't follow operations there.

As mentioned by pgtravel LGB sees a fair number of charters as such ops do-not require need slots. They only need to abide by the curfew, and follow the noise regulations.

Operations of charters at SNA is not possible as you'd need to free up a slot to do it. SNA slot regime considers air-carrier ops, scheduled or charter as one and the same.

Yeah, I sort of agree.

SNA is inside a square bordered by the 55, the 73, the 405, and MacArthur Boulevard. The north-end RON at SNA abuts the 405.

So how can you avoid the 405 ?

You can hop on the 55 without ever getting onto the 405. There's a ramp that puts you directly onto the 55N.

I haven't found it to be at all, especially on a weekend.
