Way To Go Mobile!

Tue Oct 03, 2000 11:02 am

Next Month, Mobile Regional-Bates Field will become All Jet   All we have to do is get Continental to upgrade to all ERJ's. Heres the fleet arrangements:

COMAIR: CRJ
UEX/ACA: CRJ
Delta: 727/MD-88
NWA/EXP Airlines I: CRJ
COX: ERJ

Once again, this is a HUGE success for MOB and the Gulf Coast.

I sure wish some airline would reinstate MSY-MOB nonstops. Let's see.....Delta, National/Pan Am, Southern( I think), Air New Orleans/CO Express, L'Express, and Gulfstream used to fly the route. One Beech 1900 flight from US Airways Express, who has a mini-hub in MSY, would be nice.

Congrats, Mobile!!!! Now if only Pensacola could do the same...but I don't see that happening right away. We still have props to MEM, MSY, TLH, MCO and TPA.

Although we seem to have a lot of service to MSY.
Three Daily flights on USExpress with the BE1900.
One Daily Flight on Delta with the MD90.

I wish we had nonstop service to Chicago like you guys have with UEX/ACA. I'm really jealous because fly that route a lot and I still have to change planes in ATL. Ughhh!!!

I've visited the Mobile airport several times and it definitely is much bigger than GPT. I'm really glad that Delta put in the daily nonstop trip from BHM. When I had to go to Mobile in the past I would usually drive because it would take the same amount of time to fly and connect thru ATL or MEM. I think Southwest would do well in either MOB or PNS but as FlyPNS1 said in the Southwest post, they probably have their sights on bigger cities over the next few years. I feel they probably will come at some point though.

If you happen to know, I'm curious as to why USAir pulled out of MOB. I remember back in 94 or 95 they had three or four mainline flights to CLT every day. Another question, do you think that a building a large, brand new shared airport for MOB/PNS somewhere in Baldwin County would work over the current setup of each city having their own airport and air service.

what equipment does Delta use on the non stop between mob and bhm? How long has this route been in service for Delta?

To answer your question, Stlbham, Delta uses a 727-200 (surprise..surprise) on the MOB-BHM route.

Bhmal....I too have always wondered why USAir bailed out of MOB. PNS has retained quite a bit of USAirways service including 4 mainline flights a day to CLT plus USAirways Express service to MSY, TLH and TPA. I remeber back in 95 (not sure if it was 95 or 96) that Valujet entered the Mobile market and that may have caused trouble for USAirways. However, Valujet didn't stay in MOB long and I don't know what happened to USAir.

As for combining MOB and PNS...I'm all for it. The combined airports would handle almost 1 million enplanements annually. The land between PNS and MOB (Baldwin County) is really cheap since it is primarily agricultural.

However, people in PNS and MOB don't want the extra drive. Currently both PNS and MOB are located very near their respectives cities. Second, no one is willing to pony up the money. PNS just finished spending quite a bit to upgrade and expand their airport. Third, who will run the airport? Plus if the airport generates revenue how will PNS benefit since the airport is in another state?? Plus, people in MOB don't want to drive across the bayway to get to the airport.
There are many more issues as well that will prevent this from happening.
Finally, while I can't speak for Mobile, I know that in Pensacola the city leaders aren't too fond of thinking for the future. They'd rather just plod along until it smacks them upside the head.

Stlbham, FlyPNS1 is correct in that the DL nonstops from BHM-MOB are currently with 727's. I'm from BHM also.

Shoot me an E-mail at keithturner@mindspring.com if you ever want to discuss the BHM airport.

Thanks for the in depth answer FlyPNS1. I happen to think that BHM is almost the same way in regards to not marketing the potential for our airport. The airport authority, city leaders and chamber of commerce just aren't aggressive enough in seeking new service. BHM is on track for over 3.6 million passengers this year, a new record that has grown consistently over the past 10 years. We're just lucky that airlines have chosen us due to expanding population and degradation of service in MGM and HSV plus the folks who drive over from ATL for WN. Our airport website is terrible and I have tried via letter to get someone from the airport authority to respond to me about keeping it updated and sharp with no response at all.

As for WN coming to PNS or MOB. Either one of these cities should have a full time person from either the airport authority or chamber of commerce dedicated to improving and increasing the airport service. This person should be well known at all the airlines, especially WN and frequently visit DAL and all the other potential carrier hubs to have the best chance possible for WN service. This should really be a WAR between PNS and MOB because if WN comes to either airport, my guess is that the passenger numbers at the airport WN chose not to come to would dwindle and service would decrease possibly with fewer mainline jets, maybe none! Just my opinion anyway. BHM needs this as well. We're doing good with WN and fairly good with everyone else but it's not due to the city or the airport authority doing anything special. It's just customer demand in our area. We could certainly get slightly beefed up service with the passenger totals we are running now.

I think if cities are interested in increasing air service, they have to give more than just lip service to get it. I'm talking about this city rep should be equipped with tax benefits, low gate fees, low landing fees, etc.
